how do i turn the rotating cube to be transparent i want to see them cogs

go into synaptic, install simple-ccsm, then go insto sytem>preferences> advanced dektop effects settings
then, click on "desktop cube" add-on , and click on "transparent cube" tab on the top, adjust opacy and ull get a transparent cube

I have a question related to this topic. How would I change the image in the background when I rotate the cube.

Open Compiz manager, go to Desktop Cube and select the appearance tab, you should see a check box for skydome, and a browse button to load an image.
Skydomes are limited to the maximum texture size supported by your graphics cards driver combo, I use 2048x4096. whatever size you can use you can use Gimp to resize the graphic.
