View Full Version : [ubuntu] Music files are crashing x window

I have a brand new install of gutsy on my computer and everything was working fine until I put some mp3 songs on my pc. Everything copied fine, but now I have a very weird problem.

When I rename files or folders, after about 10 or 15 files, x crashes and a file that has a gold note icon will change instantly to a white piece of paper once clicked. After that happens, every file I click on changes to the paper icon and no files or folders on the entire system will open. I can still run programs, though.

I did some googling, and it looks like the x window system is crashing. If I hit ctrl > alt > backspace, and restart X, the problem goes away. After I rename or open about 10-15 files/folders, x crashes again and I get the paper icon change.

Does this have something to do with DRM in the mp3 files? Is there a fix I can try? I'm running a Nvidia 8600 GT video card, if it helps. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

interesting error...
What is an example of what your are renaming these files too? What are they copied from and too? Could you perhaps post a screenshot of the properties of on of these files?

Encompass, thanks for the reply.

The files are renamed from things like "04 bush - strait_no_chaser.mp3" to "Bush - Straight No Shaser.mp3". I'm just cleaning them up.

They were copied from my windows xp computer c drive to CDR's, then to my new pc which has ubuntu 7.10 running on it. I will try to post a screenshot.

Very interesting bug. I don't think there is too much we can do here. Seems to be a bug in nautlus, your file manager.
I would recommend reporting your bug to http://launchpad.net/ubuntu and see if they can't fix it on an update for you.
Sorry, but I don't think there is much of a work around for this one. You will have to wait for an update.
You can link to this post in your bug report... it would be helpful for them.
