Since upgrading to Hardy Heron, when I turn on my laptop I get "Users $Home/.dmrc file is being ignored. This prevents the default session and language from being saved. File should be owned by user and have 644 permissions. User$ Home directory must be owned by user and not writable by other users."

The effects of this are that my desk top is sometimes blank.
It may have happened when I changed permissions of a file of photos ,(using the GUI) that I wanted to upload to a website.

Also, since installing HH, I cannot hear sound coming from the internet (i.e youtube) if rhythmbox is running, and when I go back to rhythmbox it crashes. Would this be related?

I'm pretty much a noob here, and would appreciate gentle assistance.
