There is nothing wrong with the 211 updates. Just update it. It takes about an hour, but then the program is up to date. Why do you object to the updates? These have accumulated over 6 months since the release. Or, just go with Hardy, which was just released. If you are installing, why stay with Gutsy?

Im very new to all of this and only installed 7.1 a few weeks ago, but it seems that if this OS is a constant work in progress, why would you question needing these updates. Your windows system updates itself every week, for years. Why is this a problem. I just dont understand. JMO

Well, pretty much all of them will be security fixes and bug fixes. they will make the existing programs work better. And unlike windows, some times the updates will actually free up space on your disk as some libraries have the at shaved off them.

Thank you...
It's best to install them all.... I thought, perhaps, that i'd missed a major release..

I have a lot more questions ....more on that later.

Don't worry, 211 Ubuntu updates won't take nearly as long half the number of Microsoft Windows updates. Then again, the repos have been under a bit of pressure, but that seems to have subsided for now.

why not just install Hardy?

A lot of those update files are quite small, I recently installed 7.10 and that sounds like about the same number I saw, but it only took about 15-20 mins to download and install, so it wasnt that bad.

This is reminiscent to my start with Ubuntu. I installed Dapper Drake 6.06 just a couple weeks before Feisty was released. Being a newbie, I just stayed with it (and it's updates) for a few months before upgrading. You'll learn after a couple cycles that waiting a month or two after the release isn't always bad-- kinks always show up and the fixes aren't always obvious or available.
Having said that, Linux is my choice. I support Windows for a living but enjoy what Linux has to offer.

why not just install Hardy?

I see this question a lot on these forums, and I think I have the answer. Because Hardy is about as stable as Charles Manson, that is why.

It's a week old, and considering how ambitious the Ubuntu release cycle is, we should probably consider *this* to be the real beta phase. Looking at the list of new threads on the newbee board should make it abundantly clear that Hardy is more than a little rough around the edges still, as I found out myself to my chagrin.

Writing this very happily on a fresh install of 7.10, where the little things like graphic drivers and file-shares still work.

You're a bit out of date. 8.04 has all the 7.10 updates included.

I'm going to wait a while for 8.04....all 211 updates are installed. Thanks again to all the suggestions.
