So the new Cedega is out, and it meets the build up it was given before release. I Was never able to get HL2 running and I was never able to get Counter-Strike (original) above a few fps.

Today I got a hold of the new release of cedega, it ran HL2, HL and CS straight off, loaded from steam. The only problem I had (which was actually unrelated to cedega) was that I had to change the config file to use ALSA.

So for those of you out there who never managed to get Half Life 2 running, don't give up hope.

I can go delete my windows partition now.. :)

*grins* Wow!

If only Gunbound worked I would defiently support them.

Worked for me no problems too, though the game itself has quite a few bugs but that's the same on Windows too.

whats the defference between hl³ on windows & linux, fps wise?
will it run faster?

ive got both versions of enemy territory, windows & linux, and it runs way faster on linux, but offcourse it doesnt require a program like cedega so can't really compare..

Emulating things always gives a big performance hit. Probably anywhere from 20% upwards.

Bad drivers make it even worse. *cough* ATI *cough*

xbit just ran a linux driver test where a GF5700 beat a X800

You should check the definition of wine ;)

Personally, after setting the launch option of hl2 and CS:S to "-dxlevel 81" I am getting the same FPS in linux as I am in windows, at the same resolution and performance settings.

This is all actually amazing, when I think back to only about 2 years ago, when I had problems getting xfree86 to load on a geforce card..

I've also had great experiences with Cedega 4.2. Grand Theft Auto III wouldn't work under Windoze 98 in any resolution other than 640X480 with 8bpp colour. Through Cedega I'm getting 1024x768 at 32bpp and it plays perfectly. The video at the start of the game doesn't seem to work, but who cares? The ones in the game work perfectly and - most importantly - so does the game itself.

Half Life and the Windoze version of Vega Strike also work perfectly; haven't tried any other games just yet. For three quid a month this doesn't seem like a bad deal.

I have been considering subscribing to Cedega. I don't buy many new games, but there are games I always have a hankering to play, and when that hits I usually boot into XP:

KOTOR, Jedi Academy, X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, Jedi Knight 2 (yes, jedis are uber sexy), Hexen 2, Heretic 2, Warcraft 3, and some various Star Trek games.

My thing is that when I do see a new game that I want, I don't want to have to go home and look up whether it will work or not on my box, then go back and buy it. I want it nooooooooooooow! :-P

But oveall the new version has a lot of positive feedback.

Unfortunately, you have to pay for Cedega. The problem is you don't know if it is worth it. You may want to play a game which is on the list with games supported by Cedega, but simply refuses to work with it. There are many stories of people very disappointed by Cedega but also many stories of people which had great experiences with it.

Personally, I think Cedega rocks :o

Yep, allways check the cedega game list before buying a game. Havn't a single problem with games that way.

Though you check linux games as well, there might be some you may like 8)

Cedega is not a free application. You have to pay for it from TransGaming.

I tried candea today, nothing worked for me.

I could install call of duty tough, but no updates for it, and it lagged like mad when I ran it. (the updates said I had to start a multiplayer game and type in my serial agin, did look there and it was correct)..
