I realize that KDE and GNOME are both very flexible, although I am having a hard time with it as a Linux newbie. They are both versatile and all that, but I've noticed that when I put either on, I either try to make it look like Windows with the typical start menu in the corner, the taskbar and clock along the bottom, or make it look like OSX with the application dock across the bottom center.

I'm curious though, what other ways are there to configure your desktop? Does anyone have any ideas on how to go about re-arranging how we use our GUI?

it really makes sense to have the menus, launchers and etc.. at the top, bottom and in the corners like, MS ans OS X. It is really a no brainer... it just looks cleaner and more organized. from my experience, I like to keep the menus on the top (like OS X), windows on the bottom (Windows), but put the launchers on the side in a separate panel (one that hides). you just need to play around and see what works best for you.
