Hey, I just installed ubuntu 8 on a partition on my MacBook Pro. I love everything about it. I would however like to run Beryl. I have seen beryl on youtube and other places, and it looks amazing. I have always wanted to install it, but never had the graphical ability till now.

All the walkthroughs and how to's seem geared to older flavors of ubuntu. Is there a way to install Beryl on Hardy? I know you have to add lines to your respatories, but i dont know how to do that. Also, I am pretty sure im already running Compiz, will that interfear with beryl?

Thanks for the help.. and if you dont mind, talk to me like im 2 years old. cause Im kinda a newb.

Beryl is old news buddy. The have made a newer version called compiz-fusion and its installed by default !

To enable it, go to the Main menu -> System -> Preferences -> Appearence.
Then click on Visual settings, and either normal or extra.

You can also mess around with settings by System -> Preferences -> Advanced Desktop Effects Settings (may have to install compizconfig-settings-manager first)

Theres plenty of guides to help you further set up if you search the forum.

I enabled the "extra" settings under appearences. And i love the jiggly windows. But i am aiming for the cool cube thingy. is that installed by default as well?

You can activate the cube in the advanced desktop settings. You also have to make sure that your workspaces are 4 long and only 1 high. Or at least thats the only way I got it to work properly. I am still a linux newb so there is likely tricks I don't know about. Have you installed the compiz-fuzion config tool in the add/remove repositories?

go to synaptic and search for compiz. install compizconfig-settings-manager. go to system > preferences > advanced desktop settings. there are a lot of cool settings in there but they aren't all easy to use and set up. maybe you can find a good guide to using them.

More information on individual settings should be here.
