Up until last night, I had not gotten a single update for Vista (I have all security and updates disabled and prefer to handle that myself).

I use Vista so rarely, once every two weeks nowadays, and had problems with it (such as my USB devices not working. Apparently, hubs confuse it and my webcam doesn't work) so I decided to run the updates. If it hosed it (possible when doing a lot of updates on any systems), I wouldn't have lost anything I cared about, if it worked, so much the better.

Well, it took a long time to install, even longer if you count the time shutdown and booting up (it "configures the updates" during those times). I spent the time installing Wolvix on my spare computer (which is really old).

Well, the updates didn't break anything that I can see. The USB issues still exist as far as I can tell. Oh well. It was worth a shot. Perhaps something will randomly work (as they did randomly not work).

is sp1 out yet? maybe they're holding back, as i believe all the updates will be rolled out with the service pack?

It's out, my mom's laptop had it last week, any improvements, none that I can see, except I see that they fixed the dastardly suspend issue(Vista had suspend issues as well FYI), and also another issue where Vista always accessed the HDD for no particular reason. I did not see any improvements concerning performance(visible ones).

I've been using Vista on my Laptop for a few months now and sp1 was installed a few weeks ago. There was a problem with copying/pasting files taking too long, this is fixed in sp1. I've had no other problems so I'm unaware what other fixes were included in thye update. I'm almost ashamed to say that I like Vista, it all works perfectly for me. It's fast, no crashes, lockups, bsod etc. I have disabled many services though, so that helps with speed I guess.

I have let Vista install my USB devices by letting it go online ( risky :) ), and they were all installed without me needing Driver disk. It was automatic and didn't even require a restart.

Well, the webcam seems to be an enigma to it.

I installed all the drivers from the disk it came with and it worked.

I use Ubuntu mostly, and it works out of the box on Linux. I have it plugged into a hub (I have three hubs) and it worked fine.

I guess Windows seems to give some special meaning to which USB port it is in. Considering I have 19 ports on this computer now...

Now it still does that "looking for a driver" thing, every single time it boots.

Why is this so confusing to Windows?
