need advice in DVDrip format

I am backing up all my DVDs to an archive hard drive.
I would like them to be recorded in divx format so they're read in those cheap dvd players tat suport divx.

Portability is the big goal... what are the settings i should define on DVD::rip?

like... which codec?
Do those divx enabled players also read xvid?
Do they suport both packing formats? mpeg and avi?

divx4, divx4, xvid, xvid2, xvid3, xvid4, ffmpeg, fame, af6... which codec should I pick?

Your best shot is probably to encode just a small portion of a video into each format, and choose the one you like the best.
If you are looking for a DVD archiving program, try dvd95 or k9copy.
