i have been a windows user all my life and wanting to try the linux experience! i downloaded the ubuntu 8.04 and tried it out got it to run and i was surfing. and trying to download another distro. any everything locked up reboot and back up and running same thing after about 20 min. i am wondering if i should not try Kbuntu instead. suggestion would be appreciated. i also may try PCLinuxOS. see my signatur for pc

What exactly happens when you try to download another distro with Ubuntu? And what happened after the reboot and waiting 20 minutes? By the way, although 256 mb of RAM will barely satisfy Ubuntu's GNOME, it will be slow. You might try Xubuntu... and definitely not Kubuntu. KDE is a memory HOG, and KDE 4 is close to 1 gig of RAM needed... Too close to Vista, IMO... :(

If you were downloading a large file while in Live CD mode, maybe it ran into issues with your RAM being tight. It turns your RAM into a virtual hard drive when in Live mode, maybe it ran out of memory while downloading and just auto-rebooted.

well i am in the process of building a new rig so i was going to try out these distros on this pc.

my new rig will be a amd ahtelon 64 2.2 ghz and 2 gigs of ram. ill be running on board video nvidia 6100 and sata 160 gig hd mayb ill try when i get that new one built
