I'm not exactly sure what I'm dealing with here, so I thought I'd ask around and see if anybody else can put a light on this for me..

I'm running boinc to do some number crunching for the greater good. I had it running on several computers and everything was fine, but then I decided to take an older (but mechanically fine) desktop and install Xubuntu. The whole system is working fine, I installed boinc, and it can't seem to connect to the server to get anything to work on.

I've checked on all sorts of ports - from what I've found, it needs port 80, 443 and 31416 (on 127.0.0.1) and they should all be okay. Any ideas, anybody??

Is there anything I need to do on the network side??

Did you install Bonic from the Synaptic Package Manager or directly from the Boinc server? When I tried it from the Package manager it would not work properly, but when I got it from the Boinc server I did not have any problems.

Edit: If their server is down you will not get any work, I am using the World Community Gird so it will alternate the work my computer is running from several different sources. So if one source cannot send work, or has no work to send at the moment, I will get a random work package from another source. My work load selections are:
AfricanClimate@Home
Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together
FightAIDS@Home
Help Conquer Cancer
Human Proteome Folding 2
I thought it was better then just running once source.

I downloaded it from synaptic - maybe when I get home I'll wipe it and install from the site directly..

Maybe I'll install folding@home too, join the ubuntu team for that..
