This topic is not directly related to Ubuntu, but I am assuming that this forum is for more diverse topics. I hope this assumption isn't too far off.

I am losing my current webhosting service (my alma mater) in a few weeks and I am debating whether to invest in a real webhost or just give up on my personal website. Right now, I have website of about 1.5GBs, including pictures, blogs, and my "work" portfolio using a variety of open-source software. I have Coppermine for my photo gallery which depends on PHP, Imagemagick, and MySQL. I have Wordpress for my blogs which is also PHP/MySQL. So of course, if I moved to a new webhost, PHP/MySQL would be a must. And it's possible I might want to install other software like Mambo (or some other content mangagement tool) in the future.

Nowdays, PHP/MySQL support doesn't seem like such a big deal. But I am also used to have an incredibly amout of freedom with my webhost (no disk quota on a compsci department host...could basically install whatever you want on your own account). I don't want to end up with a host that has ridiculous limitations like "only 1 MySQL database." I don't need any windows support at all...in fact, I would prefer to support a host that embraces open-source.

Lastly, I am still a student (read:very poor) and need an inexpensive plan (must be less than $10 a month). So, does anyone have suggestions? Any personal experience with a company that you think is well-deserving of my precious few dollars?

Thanks in advance!

I don't really know of many as I haven't been on a webhost for a while, but:
I have heard wonderful things about DreamHost.
I can also personally recommend MySiteSpace. They have GREAT service.

http://www.mysitespace.com/ they have windows and unix hosting-- I believe they use either Debian or Red Hat Enterprise.

http://www.dreamhost.com/ they ALWAYS have a sale going on. If I were going to get professional webhosting, I would go with them.

a happy customer of exabytes.com here. Here's a list of their Linux plan. http://www.exabytes.com/products/hosting/linux/

They have 3 plans that are under 10 dollars a month.
