The most annoyance I had from switching to linux was multimedia (setting audio/video codecs properly) and thanks to everybody in this forum I was able to put together an absolute beginner's guide on multimedia setup here (http://twentyplus.blogspot.com). I thought it would be great to share this information and have others cut down on their 'how do I configure Ubuntu to play audio/video files' time.:p

Thanks for making this howto Timmyp. Should this also enable watching embedded streams in firefox (I mean .rm streams that are buried in java code). That didnt work for me. Moreover, I could only open files on my home partition and not anywhere else. This is probably due to my state of n00bness. The player looked very advanced and I would like to try it again.

I tried your tutorial, but the backport and universe repos weren't available right now. I'm still getting used to Ubuntu, so what does this mean?
