Hi everyone,

With the release of Hardy and the current status of the Ubuntu CE development in suspension, I have taken it upon myself to further the Ubuntu CE dansguardian GUI program so that it works with Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron).

I know this tool is needed by a lot of people, and now that it works for 8.04 since I modified it, everyone can make the switch in safety!

Let me know how you like it.

Thanks!

You're welcome! Thats what I love about Linux in general and Ubuntu specifically - you can make it what you want and need and everyone benefits.

And that's a good idea - getting it into the repository. Any ideas on how to go about doing that? I think it's about time!

It maybe pertinent to mention it is for 32 bit and not 64 bit as I have found out :) I had no email connection or any ability to configure it after installing script, it asked for password and then nothing. I tried to apt-get remove etc.. but it failed and found lots of broken packages. As I said not your fault, simply that this is for 32 bit only :)

I ran the script and though the install went fine, I was very surprised to find that it had added the Gutsy repositories to my Hardy install. Is this a bug in the script or is it necessary? It's definitely a bad idea to mix repositories and could cause a lot of problems for people!

Quick question. (Oh, and THANKS!!)

Do the changes I make to Dansguardian in my account effect all the other (desktop user) accounts the same way? That would be cool. If not, what's the best way in each account to set up settings (like downloading ISO's, etc.)? I tried but it wouldn't accept my root password. (This is a graphical pop-up in Parental Controls.)

I've hozed (or something did) a Dansguardian installation before and wish not to repeat the embarrasment as when I last went to demonstrate it! *<8-0

It's not a bug in the script - right now this is necessary and the program works fine. The GUI is just that - a GUI that serves to allow nice control at the user level, free of gkedit command line stuff.

Hi,

I'm allready a Dansguardian user (on Suse) but planning to move to Ubuntu. I installed Hardy Heron in a VMware machine to try it.
I've got a few questions about the GUI:
Does it work with KDE? (I allready found out I have to replace gksudo with kdesu in the script).
Where can I find the GUI once I installed it?

Thanks,

Hi Clayton South,

I did run your script and as promised everything went smoothly and blocking bad pages works ... but:

I can not use torrent client - it is apparently also blocked, so I need to apply one of two alternative changes:

- (preferred) have Dansguardian+tinyproxy+firehole work only for one user (my little Son) and be de-activated for my Wife and myself (only I am sudoer on that PC)
- (bit worse solution) have torrent client (deluge) bypass the dansguardian structure.

Can you pls advise how can I achieve this ?

Also, as Polish speaker I would like to add some Polish words to the blacklists, and I saw there is quite a lot of similar files and language folders and I now wonder which are being read/used by dansguardian and which should be edited / apended with new words ?

Thank you for making life so easy with your script ..

Hello,

I am new to the area of proxy/content filtering. I want to implement Squid/Dansguardian on a small network at my church. Can I use this GUI with that combo? I plan to set up a transparent proxy with squid and Dansguardian on a dedicated machine on the network. I am just trying to do this efficiently as possible, and the idea of a GUI front end for this particular is VERY appealing. I have some idea how to proceed, but have seen some info about some GUIs only working with tinyproxy, etc.

Thanks for any info.

Thank you for this script, Clayton.
But I think it is better to publish it also outside of ubuntuforums, because you need to register on the forum before you can actually download the script. It is too complicated and takes time. Some users (including myself) want just to get the script.
Thanks for listening.

Mind you Ryb, if such a powerful script is put outside the forums, there is no guarantee someone is not going to change it without breaking it, putting systems at risk, or even worse, to inject malicious code. At least being on this forum, it gives users confidence that the script is bona fide. My two pence.

When I look in the .start script included in the download, it appears to me what is installed is:
"dansguardian", "tinyproxy", "clamav" and "firehol"
And they appear nicely in Synaptic. I assume that although there is no un-install script, is just a matter of taking them out using synaptic.
Someone else with better understanding might be want to correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi I have changed this script to force to run on intrepid so it will run.
But I don't know if it will bee working after installation. Test it if you wish.
(BTW it is enought to open "install_me" in text editor and change 'hardy' to 'intrepid')

But it wont work in long run it still uses 6.06 repositories so some packages are getting older and older in your Ubuntu. The resolution is only one. Rewrite DG Gui application in newer Gambas version or in python. So it could be independent from old repos.

P.S. After I had installed it my update-manager shown me new 7!! packages to upgrade

If you rewrite whole script :(
You can install DansGuardian alone and conf. it manually. It is not so hard to achieve simple effect.
Just read config files they are quite self explanatory.
Then config web browsers.

Greetings,
I just tried your script on 8.10.
(A disclaimer I am new to linux having just put it on my laptop and am just learning my way around using it.)

It appears everything worked fine with the installation script. The GUI runs fine and all the programs; dansgaurdian, clam, tinyproxy, and fire hol have installed.

My problem, like other users, is that when Dansgaurdian is enabled I am blocked completely from the internet in firefox. I suspect this does not have anything to do with your script but probably the configuration of the GUI or one of the programs associated with it.
But being so new to Linux I don't have a clue as to how to configure them from the terminal, and I have not seen any feedback to the questions others had in the forum as to how to fix this problem. I have tried the different security settings in the GUI but nothing more. I am going to play with it more and try to figure it out.
If I cant get it working I will probably uninstall it all and maybe try safesquid or go with the UbuntuCE on the hardy heron platform (if I can figure out how, LOL)

Blessings,
Tom

Tom

A few more thoughts for consideration.
After I rebooted, there were updates for most of the software installed by the script available, so I went ahead and updated them all, but I am now wondering if it is possible if that is why I don't have an Internet connection when I turn on the filter through the GUI now? Should I have left the older versions?

Another question I have is; if I can't get the filter working with the GUI and I uninstall just the "Dansguardian GUI" through the "synaptic package manager" could I manually get Dansguardian working through the terminal? I know there are lots of forum postings on how to set up dansguardian using just tinyproxy with Dansguaridian.
Which also leaves me wondering what is the purpose of the script installing "clamav" and "firehol" if dansguadian will work with just tinyproxy?

Sorry for all the questions but I am new to linux and ubuntu and am trying to figure this all out.

thanks,
Tom

@TitanTiger

Configure your proxy (Tinyproxy, squid etc.) to wait on some port.
For DG it is enought to set port of proxy is waiting on in config file and on what port it have to wait.
Then set your web browser to use DG port.
That is all.
(You must reboot after this steps)

@Tom4jean when you had updated your packages, configs of every package were set to default so that is problem :(:(:(

FYI - do not attempt to use this on the Dell mini 9's running ubuntu. It will require you to perform a system restore to recover. The install script was unable to find the necessary packages and after that the package manager did not work nor did automatic updates, the two are obviously related. Just thought ya'll should know so that you don't have to go through the grief....

Very nice gui indeed!

Do you think to include in near future release:

1) Remote accountability
2) Choice of adding a free DB like http://www.shallalist.de/
3) The creation of power users that can make some admin stuff like installing know softwares but cannot unlock dansguardian protection

Harpazo if you have the source code, and are good at programming you should be able to build a workaround, or the other option is restart your PC and try again. If it gives you the same issue, you have one of two solutions, either faulty RAM (highly doubt it) or clean install the app (ie - stop all processes, remove all files associated with it, and untar it and install it from scratch). I think there is a ./uninstall script there but i'm not too sure, if there is you should rather use that to uninstall it but otherwise if it gives you the same error you need more swap space:D

Yes, the install scripts are useful, sometimes even better than installing the separate parts of dansguardian manually. I have tried manually configuring dansguardian, but ended up without internet access. I downloaded and installed a install script for ubuntu 8.04, and it worked fine. The configurator doens't work, but I can adjust the filtering manually. So, thank you, Clayton South. When the next long-term release comes out, I will have to install GChildcare or the Parental Control GUI. I would LIKE to see a separate password for dansguardian or GChildcare.
(My "keyring" and "Foxfilter" have their own passwords.)

It installs dansguardian+tinyproxy+firehol, and last time I tried it, it made a backup of the iptables rules it found in my home directory. This was before the PPA was unusable. The PPA appears to be usable again, so being a new version, I guess it does the same.

For server, you would better install webmin (http://www.webmin.com/) and then add dansguardian webmin module (http://sourceforge.net/projects/dgwebminmodule/).

For Jaunty desktop, I have made new package, see below post:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1192578

It will help you to install, configure and manage dansguardian to work with firehol and tinyproxy.

Oh dear, could someone please verify. This script hasn't worked for me just now.
Ok. I created a hardy virtual machine using VirtualBox for testing. I wanted to make sure I could install in my main hardy machine without problems, looks like it was good job I did.
Anyway.
1- Downloaded the script in the first post of this thread.
2- Extracted the contents, ran install_me.
3- Pop-ups read and acknowledged, continued installation.
4- Error "Install Web Content Filtering Script" "one or more of the needed packages were not installed. It is highly recomended that you immediately rename or move the WebFiltering_Backups folder located in your Home directory and then re-run this script to ensure that your system is setup properly"
5- Did just that. Same error.
6- Restarted and did the same process all over again.
6- Now synaptic reports broken packages.
7- Did sudo apt-get update
and I get:
Err http://archive.ubuntu.com gutsy/universe Packages 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.45:80]
same for a long list of sources.

Is it that the some packages needed for the script to run aren't available for download and the dependencies aren't met, thus failing the installation?

Not a problem for me, as I said I was testing in a VM, but if I've got the problem identified correctly, means no-one could use for Hardy as it is anymore. That would be sad.

I have rewritten the whole thing, please see this post:

I wrote it for Jaunty, but I guess it should work for Hardy and intrepid as well.

No good news to report just yet. The script ran fine, but now I've no internet access. I think the problem is that tinyproxy fails to start. I'm trying to figure out what the cause is.

Could you try to stop dansguardian. It will stop all dansguardian, tinyproxy, and firehol. If after stopping them you still have no internet connection, you have to troubleshoot your internet connection first.

If the Internet connection is ok, than start dansguardian and observe the terminal output for any error.

Forgot to mentioned. If this is the first time you install dansguardian, please execute the first option first:

"Autoconfigure/reset dansguardian tinyproxy firehol"

Otherwise you will not have internet connection.

I should have mentioned it. After installation, I did do that: "Autoconfigure/reset Firehol Dansguardian Tinyproxy". I just done it again and the output is:
mkdir: cannot create directory `/home/<mylogin>/.cache': File exists
[sudo] password for <mylogin>:
grep: /usr/lib/firefox-3.0.11/firefox.cfg: No such file or directory
* Stopping DansGuardian dansguardian [ OK ]

grep: /usr/lib/firefox-3.0.11/firefox.cfg: No such file or directory

Still no internet.
Now the curious thing is that from my previous attempt to install the install the webcontent control script (which failed), it leave on the menu entry for "Webcontent control" under applications > system tools. I can launch it, and shows that Firehol is on, Tinyproxy is off and Dansguardian is off.
If I attempt to turn Tinyproxy on from it by clicking on the tinyproxy button, it the output stops at "Starting tinyproxy, tinyproxy"
I'll keep looking, any ideas would be great.
Thanks.

Sorry, just realised I should have posted this in it's own thread. I'll do just that, sorry.

I don't understand these instructions AT ALL. Please clarify:

$ Autoconfigure/reset dansguardian tinyproxy firehol
bash: Autoconfigure/reset: No such file or directory

Have you installed dansguardian-gui? If yes, find it in the menu and launch it, it has that option (Autoconfigure/reset dansguardian tinyproxy ...)

By the way, which ubuntu release you are using?

Ahh...no - I'll try that!

I'm using Karmic. I have a few "other" issues with the system (its set-up for a 10 year old).

1) I keep getting a warning about updating the iana script? How do I do this &

2) Sites such as live.gnome.org do not load even after being added to the white list (maybe this will get solved with proper configuration)

Thanks for the quick reply,
CH

If you are using lucid, checkout below website:

http://www.ubuntuce.com/convert.htm

change sudo apt-get install ubuntu-ce with dansguardian-gui if you only want to install dansguardian.

1. It is due to firehol, I have removed firehol and replace it with custom firewall included in dansguardian-gui, but I thought you does not want to install dansguardian-gui. So, please study to update iana script included in firehol.

2. It is some bugs either in dansguardian or tinyproxy. Please try to use older version of dansguardian or replace tinyproxy with other proxy such as squid.

Installing dansguardian-gui mentioned in may previous post will solve those two problems.
