laptop speakers problem

After installing hardy, playing sounds goes very strange, extreamly distorted, it worked fine in Gutsy. Any way i can fix it?

It could be to do with Pulse Audio.

What sound card do you have if you know :)

Is there a way to find out through ubuntu?
I have everest installed in windows (dual boot) so i can probably check that way but it would be nice to check through ubuntu

you could open a terminal and do
lspci and post the output in here :)

make sure you dont have some other audio channel open, which might create static (in gnome-volume-control) enable all the tracks, and check

Just to make it look clearer, I can't exactly help -- although I would like to :(

you should have the gnome volume control in the pantel, right click, open volume control (or go system>preferences>volume control)

click edit>prefrences, check all the boxes to enable all the tracks. mute everything except what you want.

then click file>change device choose another device and repeat. make sure nothing else is unmuted.

also try lowering volumes, and if the volume is too loud, you sound card may clip the sound, which is what you might call distortion

i think that sound card should work fine though

I guess this could be a pulseaudio issue, so once you have tried this, close all programs using sound, then run in the terminal
killall pulseaudio
(maybe repeat this until it say no process to kill, so you know it is dead)
then attempt to play some sound. killing pulseaudio is not a solution, but it could help is diagnosis.

other general bug fixing techniques: try it on a new user, see if you still have the problem, try it on a live cd if you have one around (or could get one easily)

does this happen on every program, could you more describe the distortion, clipping for instances makes louder sounds sound crakily
