I left it upgrading overnight. In the morning there was no indication that anything had been running.
Running any update app informed me that the update table was broken and that I should "apt-get install -f".
Doing this trashed my Gnome and boots in a small terminal in the upper left side of the screen.
I reverted to an old functional 7.10.

Why bother with an upgrade? Do a clean install instead. Upgrades were never trusted, and even though they work for some, they don't work for others.

You could also try to upgrade with the Upgrade Manager. It worked for me.
System -- Administration -- update manager
Then, have it check for the new upgrade.
If you already tried this though, my apologies. I upgraded last night. It took a while, but I'm 8.04 now.
