sound problem

Plzzzzz look into my problem
In my ubuntu desktop version, sound does noit play in flow.
No sound plays good not even the startup sound.
I think there is a problem in drivers of something.
I am not able to resolve.
similar problem exits in case of other linux like fedora 7 & fedora8
