I have an HP dv9628nr laptop with a vista/kubuntu7.10 dual boot with wicd as wireless manager

This morning, wicd dropped my connection (something it does with depressing regularity) and I was unable to reconnect without rebooting.

Rebooting brought up a blank monitor. No grub. No log-in. No anything. LiveCD's don't bring up anything on the monitor.

Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted.

Same thing has happened to me before. I've power button shutdown each time because nothing else would generate a response. Next time it happens I'm gonna try Ctrl + Alt + Backspace, read somewhere that it will restart X server which might be causing the issue.

If you can get grub to show up, booting in recovery mode has usually fixed the issue for me. My filesystem is usually corrupted by the power button shutdown though so I end up having to reinstall ubuntu.

I can't get grub to show. That's the problem.

Have you tried to do full power cycle? That is take the battery off for few seconds to let capasitors to drain fully. I've had similiar thing happen on my laptop once and taking battery off for few secs fixed it.

That is exactly what customer support person at HP told also--just a few seconds after you did! Many thanks!!! I can't live without my laptop... my wife says I love it more than her (she's wrong but it's close:grin:)... she won't say anything about she's chained to hers:)
