I'm currently running a Dell Inspiron 1501 on Ubuntu 7.10, and I was just wanting to make sure that if I upgrade to 8.04, will everything on my laptop still work?

Like, does everything that works in 7.10 work in 8.04?

Thank you very much!

I have a 1501. Worked better for me actually.

That's reassuring!

Another question: Will upgrading the OS version keep any changes I've made to the previous one? Will I have to redo all my wireless configurations, or re-download programs, etc?

Sorry for all the questions.

Not sure, I did a clean install for 8.04.

In theory you could just change all of the repos from gutsy to hardy and make it download all of the newer programs. That should work just like normal updates but it will get you 8.04. Don't quote me on that, it fried my install and my MBR and I had to reload both Ubuntu and Windows on my laptop.

I too have a Dell Inspiron 1501 and I've had big problems with 8.10 Hardy Heron. I wish I waited a month or so before installing it. It seems that some people have no problem, other do.

Here is an Ubuntu forum thread that describes my video card problem:

Here is my Ubuntu forum thread for my icon problems:

Brightness is supposed to work with Fn + up and down arrows. For me a brightness bar is displayed, but it wont increase or decrease the brightness. The one for the volume control works though.

I haven't tried to see if my laptop will suspend properly, but I have seen some threads where some people have problems.
