Hi all,
I'm not sure if this is in the right forum, or where I might ask this question, so please forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong area.
I'm going to be in the second year of my computer science undergraduate degree in the fall and I've decided I need a desktop for my room. I have an old one lying around and have decided to upgrade some of its hardware and use it to complete programming assignments and that sort of thing (mainly C, C++, Java). That will be its main purpose. I've decided to spend a few hundred (max $500 probably) on upgrading this one, instead of paying $2000+ for a new one.
Here are the current specs:
Intel P4 2.0 GHz Northwood
512 MB RAM (1 stick)
40 GB HDD
GeForce 2 Ultra
Ok so here's my question:
What upgrades would you recommend (that are compatible with Ubuntu) for the purposes of software development and programming? I would like to have dual monitors possibly, for more room to look at code, and I would need an AGP card that supports this. I believe the motherboard only supports AGP 4x, so any 8x card will have to run slower, if possible.
My current monitor is a CRT, and I'd prefer not to have to lug that all the way to where I go to school, so I'm interested in buying one or two cheap LCDs instead.
I don't think a hard drive upgrade would be necessary for what I'm doing, but more RAM would most likely help. The current RAM is DDR PC2300 I think? It's been a while since I've used this thing.
Thank you for any ideas/suggestions you may have.
-Mike
