Headless Server Upgrade - 6.06.2 LTS > 8.04 LTS

I have a headless 6.06.2 LTS server. Can I upgrade via apt-get? Is this the right procedure or will it only upgrade me to the next release not the next LTS release? All of the info I have seen seems to be for servers with monitors.

1. sudo apt-get update
2. sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

I haven't done the upgrade yet, but I plan on doing it soon.
