As the name implies this is a list of of mud games and hopefully the best ones though different people have different tastes.
For those who are not familiar with Mud games they are text based rpg games that are played with a telnet or mud client. Though they may seem difficult to play at first they are easy to learn how to play and actually are beneficial in learning keyboard skills and are good exercise for the mind. There are a few good mud clients available in synaptic that should start you off.
Mudconnect is a Mud listings page with a huge amount of muds it also lists by categories which is helpfull to find a mud to meet your specific needs.

Here is a list to start this thread off.
The first game I will list is called Materia Magica. It is a huge world even in mud terms. The game is very user friendly and is a good mud games for people new to muds. Outdoor areas are done with a overhead map making navigationg outside of areas easy. There is also a compas showing exits which makes navigation in towns very easy. They also have the best help file system of all the muds I have tryed. SO if you have some spare time give it a try.

Also there is Shadow Gate it is pretty stict to Dungeons and Dragons 2.0 and is a bit harder than Materia Magica but not by much. I liked it because its fun to play.

*resurrecting this thread* :)
Today, I have started on the Discworld mud:

Though I'm still a bit cautious in the game itself, don't dare yet to stray very far :)
another thread on MUDs here on the board (though it is in the 5.04 section):

I've recently starting playing Awakened Worlds (http://www.awakenedworlds.net/). It's looks quite good, although I have noticed some spelling mistakes/typos here and there. It's based in the Shadowrun world and adheres to the 3rd Ed. rules pretty strictly. Anyone who is a fan of cyberpunk style fiction (neuromancer, jonny mnemonic, matrix, blade runner, etc) should check it out. :)

I <3 to mud.
I used to play these, and I think that they're all really well done.
Devil's Silence ( this one is strictly for the hardcore PvP players, no leveling focus at all. )
Avatar ( good for people who don't like PvP. Huge mud, with probably the biggest playerbase of any mud I've ever played on. HUGE population )
Faerun ( not around anymore, based on AD&D's campaign setting "Forgotten Realms" )
and several others.
I'm looking for a really nice client for Kubuntu. Anyone know of one? I'm spoiled, because I used to use Rapscallion on Mac which is BY FAR the absolute best mud client with an unending amount of features including the ability to script plug-in modules for triggers and other such things. You could even map everywhere you go in the mud and it would display the mapped areas graphically. you could write scripts that would plit out certain text (such as tells, says, yells, shouts, whispers, damage, combat descriptions) and display it in it's own designated window, seperate from the main mud window (this is a SWEET feature).
Is there any chance that there's a client for linux out there with similar features? If not, I'd like to try writing one.

Also, I forgot to mention that you can find the exact mud that you want to play through this website:
www.mudconnector.net
Go to the advanced search feature, and you can specify everything from population of players to world size and genre (fantasy, tolkien, sci-fi, cyberpunk, pern, adult, etc.) to codebase (diku, lp, muck). It's really really nice. I'd put money on the fact that almost any mud available is listed there too.
Now I dare you to peel yourself offa you client for a week.

I used to be very active in MUME (Multi Users in Middle-Earth), which is a MUD based in Tolkien's Third Age. Last I looked, it was still being actively developed. Unfortunately it is a huge time-eater, and I can't afford it any more :(

word.

afford? Is this a pay-to-play mud? If it is, you should know that there are many, many quality muds that are always free to play. I would suggest to anyone who asked, that paying for a mud is a waste of money as the pay-to-play muds have no features or content that can't be found in a free mud.

Afford in terms of time. Graduate student life is... interesting.

Well, I give you guys the best MUD I have ever found, and I used to play a *LOT* of them. It doesn't have a lot of players at the moment, but...

eternalfantasy.org:3333 to connect
The Eternal Fantasy - the definitive Final Fantasy MUD online, with the worlds of FF1, FF4, FF5, and FF6 well covered, and always growing. LOADS of classes, and an FF Tactics-style job changing system, complete with subjobs. I can't remember exactly how many "final tier" classes there were, but...a lot, and that's ONLY counting the ones with a level 70 requirement. Come check it out! I'm Kuprin on there, too, kupo!

What if one wants to host a MUD. Anyone know where to start the writing/launguage/scripts for a mud?
I'm new to the hosting side of the table, and looking for a project.
Thanks in advance.

Not exactly what kind of MUD you are looking for, though when I first started, it was suggested to me to setup a CircleMUD (http://www.CircleMUD.org), mainly because there is still an active community there who is updating and working on things, and who will answer your questions. All of the MUD is pretty well documented. It is written in C and C++, which means that as long as you have the GCC compilers installed, you can set the whole thing up by following their docs in a matter of minutes.
You can grab a copy of the latest CircleMUD from the FTP site (http://ftp.circlemud.org). If you have any questions, feel free to send me a message and I'll do what I can with helping you along your way.
