Hi

I have brand new Compaq C768TU machine loaded with Ubuntu 7.10,The display adapter is :

VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Now when I try enabling the "Visual Effects" , it says "Desktop effects could not be enabled". Please help me get/install the correct driver for the above intel adapter. Thank you.

Praveen.

It's blacklisted due to some issues. Here's a workaround. (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=582112) I suggest you to wait till tomorrow when Hardy (Ubuntu 8.04) ships, and see if the blacklist is removed (alternative you can search around in the developer>hardy heron forum).

Thanks UB,

May be this is off topic but how can Ubuntu make inroads into
the Windows desktop market when People like me have to spend one week
searching for the drivers ?!! I can go straight and install windows xp and
things will just work fine. I think Ubuntu has a long way to go.

That's cause you are used to Windows and not Linux (and you do not have Compiz in xp).

I started to use Ubuntu in 2006 currently dual-booting at that time. I really felt Ubuntu was so simple (in terms of "negative") and hard to use (it has gone long since that time though). Early in 2007, Vista felt so slow and bloated (not to mention annoying), compared to Ubuntu that I just wiped it right off:)

It's a learning curve. The intel 965 will probably work out of the box in Hardy if Intel have gotten them self together.

Hardy Beta has been great on my laptop with GM965 and X3100. There are only a few effects that compiz-fusion doesn't like, but other than that it's running perfect right out of the box.

Thats true...I think the key to success of Ubuntu is to work closely with the different hardware vendors intel...Hp...etc...I'll install Hardy and post my updates On separate thread for the good of everyone who owns a Compaq Presario C768TU .

On my Dell Inspiron 1525 (Intel X3100 graphics) the Compiz blur plugin doesn't work for some reason. I haven't bothered to work out why since I don't really use it.

ok, that's not a big issue for me either. But how is hd movie playback working for you?
