Howto: Install all (and latest) plugins of compiz-fusion

First you have to remove compiz and all dependencies:
sudo apt-get remove compiz-core compiz-fusion-plugins-extra compiz-fusion-plugins-main compiz-gnome compizconfig-settings-manager libcompizconfig0 libdecoration0 compizconfig-settings-manager python-compizconfig emerald

Then get compiz-git:
wget http://www.xs4all.nl/~mgj1/downloads/compiz-git_0.1-2_all.deb
sudo gdebi compiz-git_0.1-2_all.deb
And run it:
sudo compiz-git --install

Result:

It's all in the compiz-manager (in your menu, under preferences).

im about to try this out, but before i do my i suggest that before you remove compiz etc etc that you run something like metacity --replace.

Shouldn't need to. Linux would store compiz in RAM so it will still work when you delete it.

Durand is right. However, if you activate a new plugin or disable one, I believe compiz will crash (but that shouldn't be a big problem).

in my experience its always best to have a window manager to fall back on if what you are trying to do doesnt work.
which luckily for me is a good thing seeing as im now about to try this for a second time as something must have gone wrong the first time, no compiz ? as in not installed ?

a couple of questions (which may sound daft) all the icons in ccsm (eg the lamp for the animation plugin) are grey ? i take it this is because its the latest version ? (or did i do something wrong again :-))
the other thing is the photo wheel isnt there ? again i take it this is because it isnt in this version ?
(you wouldnt happen to know how i could install the photo wheel plugin )

Ignore the photo wheel bit, ive just installed it, cheers for the guide, out of all the compiz from git how too's this one has been the most effective and the easiest.

The photowheel isn't there because it is unsupported. Tomorrow I'll show you how to install anything from the git repo(1).

ive installed the photowheel, although it doesnt work (may not work with this version) not to worry, i did think it was a good thing, but it seems the person who built it hasnt done anything with it for a while, so it may not be around for long. it is cool though.
although not as cool as the cyclinder plugin, turning the cube into a cylinder is a good idea, looks good when you set the compiz screen saver of and running and let the gnome screen saver run on it.

anyway you should be able to see what i mean about the ccsm icons

Yep, I just installed from the guide also and I have the same issues as the two previous posters. No title bar on the windows when using compiz as the window manager, using the Icon in the upper right, I can switch back to Metacity and get the title bars back.

Also, the icons are grey just like the pic above for mine also. I am also unable to switch themes in emerald when using that as the manager.

Any help?

In the upper right hand of the desktop, you should have ht eCompiz Fusion Icon, If not start it from Applications >> System tools.

Right click the icon and switch the Window manager to Metacity. That is what worked for me.

I have the same problem.
Turns out that the dependencies can't be resolved in 7.10. In Hardy however, they'll be easily available. So just wait a day for the upgrade.

never mind, i created a folder and put all the compiz related folders into it, everything still works.
both the methods in this thread worked well for me, so if you want the latest compiz and all the other stuff that comes with it, then try one of these out, easy and effective.

have you tried going to synaptic - so settings - administration - synaptic package manager, then serching for compiz ?
you should get a load of things with green boxes next to them, you can select anything compiz related and mark for removal.
or you could try running this in terminal -

sudo apt-get remove compiz-core compiz-fusion-plugins-extra compiz-fusion-plugins-main compiz-gnome compizconfig-settings-manager libcompizconfig0 libdecoration0 compizconfig-settings-manager python-compizconfig emerald

just copy and paste it.

then re-boot your system.

ive just been messing with ccsm and i noticed that although using the makefusion9 script the photo wheel is installed, but wont function because for some reason not all the options are there, eg you cant set key bindings because the option isnt there,
ive tried re-installing that plugin and cant get it to work still, strange but true.

I was having trouble getting this working. After the script there was just no compiz, no matter what I tried.

Eventually I ran /usr/bin/fusion-icon and got an error, glxinfo not found.

So I figured out you need to do

sudo apt-get install mesa-utils

If you get the same problem as me that is.

If it works with git, yes, it should update everything.

If you deleted the source files, you will have to rerun ./makefusion9 clone That command downloads/updates the source files.

Also, make sure that when you redownload the script you gedit it again to change the configuration options.

This compiz is extremely laggy for some reason. Vanilla 8.04 one worked perfect, and this is an 8600gt with 169.12 drivers.

Uninstalling the first script doesn't seem to work at all for me, even though it says it does. The settings manager, emerald theme manager and icon etc it creates do not disappear, and everything on my system labeled compiz under synaptic is removed, yet for some reason activating effects under appearance still works (poorly)...

The maker of the script should look into this post:

this has a problem, it skips something if it is not updated, it should only do that for emerald, emerald-themes, and compiz, maybe bcop and ccsm, but it should never skip plugins, they won't be built against the newer compiz

you'll have to check what is relatively API independent, and add rules to skip those, or not skip any

Also, plugins-* builds against plugins-main, so there again, the others have to be rebuilt

Maybe this is the cause of all the missing icons in CCSM. Also, after updating today (using compiz-git --install), the widgets and buttons that you press to change keybindings no longer work. Plugins such as Cube Atlantis also stopped working. I believe this is due to what is described by the above quote.

Plugins that do not get updated should still be built after each update!

Edit: Also OP, you have a typo on your website download link. Version says 10-2 even though it's 1-2.

Edit2: Err... also, --uninstall is sort of broken. It not only gets rid of compiz (like it's supposed to) but also gets rid of the entire compiz-git program! Are you sure you want that? Isn't that what the DEB package is for? If I want to remove compiz-git, I will use apt-get remove compiz-git. Think about it.

Edit3: --uninstall, reinstall DEB, --install seems to have fixed the issue with plugins like Cube Atlantis not working. They work now. Icons in ccsm still do not show up. Widgets (trying to change keybindings and mousebindings) still do not work. Might be something to do with a recent commit that didn't go right. Errors when trying to change keybinding: Traceback (most recent call last):

Alright, I've installed using the Italian script, and it does NOT remove the icons from CCSM and it does NOT have an error when changing keybindings/mousebindings. The problems many people face seem to be caused in part by the compiz-git script. I tried to remove it, and did sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager, and it told me that some packages needed to removed so I removed them by following the prompts. However, I tried to install ccsm and it gave me this:

Help, I'm new to Ubuntu! What does this mean? How do I fix this and get back Compiz Fusion the regular way!?

The first method worked fine for me. I did have to manually install the dependencies, but once I did that everything seems to work fine. I am running 8.04 on an old ATI 9200 card.


You may have to note the dependencies and install those through synaptic.

BTW... What are some of the default binding for the plugins for compiz ?

Instead of installing it using dpkg, use sudo gdebi compiz-git_0.1-2_all.deb This will take care of the dependencies. The OP should update his guide.

Btw OP: your links to that italian site are broken. The script you link to is also outdated.

I did a fresh install of 8.04 and I am waiting for all the bugs in this script to be worked out, or some more information on the Italian script to be shown. I have a backup point that I can restore to, but I didn't like the way it when the first time I ran the OP's script.

hello again.

i recently broke my system (not by messing with compiz) so i re-installed hardy, all went well.
now im trying to install compiz from git again, i tried the first method a while ago, so this time i thought id try the italian script (i have already tried this and found it worked) anyway so i run the script (the latest version of the script) but it does nothing, wont install compiz.
it clones git fine but when it comes to running the makefusion9 install part it runs and just towards the end of the process it throws out a couple of errors and says compiz not installed.
any ideas ?

okay got it working now, although i couldnt get the italian scritp to work, just wouldnt play the game, so i decided to try the original method (first post by Martje_001) which (as it did the first time) worked perfectly, it didnt install all the things the italian script did (its easy enough to install them though, extra plugins)

i dont understand why the italian script didnt work this time round.

i would also like to point out (dont know if this has been fixed) but when i opened ccsm all the icon appear as they should eg - they arent little grey box type icons ? so all is well, im off to see if i can get the photo wheel plugin to work, i know its not that fancy, but i like it :-)

ok had the greyed out icons in the compiz manager ho hum so i went to the italian
site as refered to i have down loaded the makefusion9-017.tar.gz. from that point im lost i have looked at the translated instructions but its all flying over my head slightly. anyone care to hold my hand and help me through please.i have uninstalled the compiz stuff ready to try again.

The windows that were already opened (like firefox in this case) I can see the inside but can't click or do anything, the new windows that I open after change to compiz, stay blank (like terminal in this case)

For those people who are having trouble with the Italian script, have you tried running ./makefusion9 packages to install dependencies?

Also keep in mind that you have to edit the script before executing it. If you're on ubuntu-hardy, make sure the repo you download from is "master" not master-noxcb.

Depending on your processor, yes it could be. If you have an older computer it will take longer.

I used this script when I first installed 8.04 a few weeks ago, then I decided to do a fresh install and I used your newer script to install compiz from git. Your new script didn't work at all for me, it kept giving me errors, fusion-icon wouldn't work, it said compiz wasn't installed when it was installed, I had so many problems with the new script you made. I decided to try out this old script, and it works just fine. No errors when trying to install, nothing. It worked right off the bat. I hope you don't remove this script for that newer one until you get that one working.

how do i put it back? when i go to system>perf>... there's none saying advanced desktop settings like before with the desktop cubes and everything! :( helpp plzzz..

Kiba dock has nothing to do with the compiz effects, so I cant see how it got rid of it. Just go to synaptic, search for ccsm and reinstall it.
