I知 planning on dual-booting w/ Vista x64 soon, but I want to make sure I can beat it into submission first. Can somebody suggest a good resource for tweaking/hacking/hamstringing Windows Vista? Specifically, I知 looking for information about: how I can keep it from phoning home to Redmond, run any software I want on it, shoring-up any sneaky back-doors, recommendations for a good third party firewall, etc, etc, etc. Thankz.

They just released a TweakUI for Vista, but only 32 bit.

Really, If your worried about Vista Phoning Home, the only thing you can do is not use it. Or XP, Or 2000, or any Server edition.

Just try and lobotomize yourself and think of it as a "feature". Not that I don't run vista on my laptop, my solution? NO INTERNET IN VISTA!!! Runs great, no spyware, and no data mining.

1) Download the latest drivers for your hardware to ensure compatibility.
2) Read various online guides. Personally I have left most everything at default and it works great!
3) Phone home? I've never seen any version of Windows phone home without my consent. I allow it to send error information to Microsoft for anonymous research purposes.
4) AVG Antivirus
5) The built in firewall should be fine, otherwise sit behind a hardware firewall.
6) Sneaky backdoors? What kind of software do you normally run into while on the internet?
