MP4/MKV in Ubuntu 8.04 (and 7.10)

Hello, I cant get either filetype to play correctly on either 8.04 or 7.10.

I have the restricted extras package, and I have Totem and VLC player.

Any advice will be very appreciated; thanks guys!

I am able to watch video files in mkv format using xine, tottem without any issues. Did not install any codec. The only problem I face - not able to forward the video. It just hangs.

Not tried with VLC. Any specific errors you get with these players?

I am using Ubuntu 7.10
