Thunderbird

i use thunderbird for my email. but it does not show a notification icon in the system try when a new mail arrives, nor does it make a sound. can anyone help!

You need to install a Mail Notifier. Both of these can be installed through repo.

Or you can use the MozTrayBiff extension (http://moztraybiff.mozdev.org/), which provides a "minimize to tray" feature combined with a mail notification icon. I personally use this together with the Mailbox Alert extension (http://tjeb.nl/Projects/Mailbox_Alert/index.html), for more customized alerts.
