In Windows XP, it is Fn-F7. Can't figure out how to do it with Ubuntu.
Using a Toshiba Satellite A60, if that makes a difference.

Are you talking hot keys, or in general?
Brightness adjustment can be found in Power Management (System). It should be noted that laptop brightness is a bit buggy. For example, is your laptop dark when plugged in or on battery?
I have a Gateway MX6958 and I could never get the bright/dim adjustment to work....it was either 100% bright or black black black. I had to tweak it so that it didn't dim when on battery power.

I found installing the applet to the pannel and controlling it from there was the easiest way.
