Seeing that I cannot be penalized for my opinions, I have used PCLinux 2008 Gnome and I like it far better than Ubuntu.

Everything works "out-of-box"

Less configurations/tweaking the system, to get it to where you want it

"Look and Feel" is better

has PCCC - where's ubuntu's?

anyway just my 2 cents.

I think that Ubuntu is far superior to PCLinuxOS because of the color scheme.

Just my two cents.

PCLinuxOS is a pretty good distro IMHO. If you liked it, you may want to checkout Mandriva because PCLinuxOS is based on Mandriva.

Hi ibutho,

I did find this out when talking with some of the users from that forum. I used Mandriva in the past. It is a pretty nice stable OS.

Take Care,

indeed. viva mandriva!

pclinuxos is to mandriva, what linuxmint is to ubuntu. basically a slick looking distro with all codecs pre-installed.

I used PCLOS Gnome 2008 for a little bit and agree that its installation was much easier. I didn't have any problems installing.

Ubuntu (Gutsy), on the other hand, I had quite a bit of trouble, but I ultimately got it going because of help from the community. I still use Ubuntu over PCLOS because of the community support.

However, I agree, PCLOS 08 is a great distro.

Don't get me wrong, I still think ubuntu is a good OS. It is stable.

True. I have a soft spot for Mandriva because Mandrake was my first ever distro about 8 or 9 years ago. Linux has improved a lot since then.

Mandriva 2008.1 Gnome was a disaster on my machine. Install disc was fine, and I did two clean installs. Fedora 9 beta worked better, except for the package manager. PCLinux Gnome is very good.

Gnome 2.22 is not used in that PCLinux variant yet. For me, I am shying away from distros that are maintained by individuals or very small groups. The recent news at Mepis is why. I find myself more and more using Ubuntu, openSuSE, and maybe Fedora. Large communities with long histories.

You sure can. I was referring to the distributions color schemes right after a fresh install. I also find it amusing that some people seem to put aesthetics before performance and functionality, not that there is anything wrong with that. Like tech9 said, to each his own.

I liked PCLOS and it is a very polished linux distribution. I am not sure why but I always prefered ubuntu over it for some reason. That is after I configure them both the way I like them as i enjoy adding my own special touch.

It is all about tastes really, I like Pepsi and my friend prefers Coke.

what news is that?

The chief maintainer (Warren) has a new job, i.e., he has better things to do. Who can blame him, really.

Indeed, good for him... He's been through a lot and he was responsible for releasing perhaps one of the nicest KDE-based distros available...

I did an update to my grandsons computer running pclinux gnome (quite a few packages I might add) and when all was said and done it reverted back to the kde desktop - no big deal but very interesting!

yes in deed there are a lot on good packages already included in the OS. How are you liking it?

I love it!

I have not had time to try out PClinuxOS2008 ,but when I do I probably will switch back over to it for a bit then go wait I am missing something and go crazy and look at three other distros, and then come back to it,then go back to ubuntu.I have no clue why ,but PClinuxOS and I don't stick together :(.It could be the rolling release.
