I have just found the equation editor in abiword, which allows LaTeX style input. Excellent!
Except, I need to get this into a format I can send to Word users. I tried rtf and .doc, but the equation just disappears.
Has anybody got this working somehow? Thanks,.

Abiword stores internally the equation as mathml code as far as I know. No chance to export either latex or mathml to rtf, at least. Even exporting to word format is not easy at all (I totally ignore which is the format used by word). You might send your friends a pdf file.

OK, thanks.
I have meanwhile found that I can use oowriter to do what I want. Although the trick is easy, it ain't obvious. I write my equations using the standard oowriter formula, then save as .doc. When I sent this to a Word-only colleague the first thing he saw was boxes instead of some of the greek symbols. Still, when he double-clicked on the equations they were re-formatted to Word and looked perfect. He sent the file back to me and it also looked fine. Odd, but seems to work.
And as to sending pdf, then that doesn't help. I am the only Linux user among 15 authors working on an article. That means I have to figure out how to work with Word. Without installing M$oft stuff of course ;)
(And yes, I did suggest we all used OpenOffice, but such innovations aren't popular among MS users!)
