8.04 RC and volume control not working

Ive just installed 8.04 RC last night.
Pretty impressed thus far but one minor prob.

Pentium 4 1.7ghz, MSI 6526gl 768M RAM, Nova PCI DVB tuner.

Im using onboard sound, fresh install on my test machine. All is working pretty well except that the volume control does not change the volume (even slightly)

any ideas?

I've had this once before... the alsa default device was not the onboard sound card..
