A handy trick I discovered for laptops. It's great for when you go to a library or a coffee shop and you don't want the computer making lots of obnoqious sounds. Basically what happens is there is no sound when nothing is plugged into the computer's sound out port. That way when computing when out you have no sound. If you plug in headphones you have sound or when you get home you can plug your laptop into your speaker system and have sound. Very handy in my own opinion. :p
Right click your volume icon at the top of the screen. In the contexual menu click open volume control. Turn down the volume all of the way. Put the PCM-2 volume up to what you want. And you're done! (I'm using Realtek ALC880 (OSS Mixer) according to the window title.)
