I just installed Puppy 4.0 beta on my very old machine, and it flies; lightening speed and elegant; my problem was I could not install the packages I wanted, e.g. ntfs read/write support, etc.
I am curious is there a Linux OS that uses the same principles as Puppy but derives its sources from Ubuntu/debian?
I am so getting used to the ubuntu way, that I cant see myself doing anything else but sudo apt-get stuff.
anyone know of a distro like this?

Not that I have seen yet. Xubuntu is lighter, but not necessarily any faster. Puppy is fast because of it's design rather than the GUI on top. You could put Gnome on top of Puppy and it would not surprise me if it is still faster than Ubuntu. It's simply the way it is designed.
Fluxbuntu might be somewhat faster, since it is a redesign of Ubuntu sort of like Mint, but aimed at being faster. I have not tried it out myself, and I have not really heard much about it in terms of speed.

If you have the skill you could set Puppy's su to sudo and add apt-get. Puppy uses it's own repos, as well as Slackware's repos. A 'PuppyBuntu' for all intents and purposes is sort of like asking for a UnixBuntu, they are related, but not the way you think.

If its any consolation I think many people want a multiuser distro that flies like Puppy and can apt-get.

Do a minimal install of Ubuntu, and aptitude (apt-get) anything you want.

NTFS support should be possible in Puppy if not available as default. Check out at their forums at

I have three suggestions for Ubuntu based lean distros. They are:
PUD (http://pud-linux.sourceforge.net/)
BeaFanatIX (http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=beafanatix)
Minibuntu (http://minibuntu.crealabs.it/)

Fluxbuntu is 100% what you want.
