View Full Version : Mythbuntu as house server

I've currently got Ubuntu 7.10 as my server which is used for very basic purposes, mainly file storage (smb, samba) and a few webservices (Webmin).

I've not got a mythbuntu frontend, but I'm considering it. I'm contemplating re-installing my server rather than upgrading. Is there any reason why I shouldn't install Mythbuntu rather than Ubuntu server or Ubuntu desktop as a server?

Lars

Hi,

Why not just upgrade the server and put together a seperate frontend.

If you feel happy working from the command line just leave the server without running X and hide it somewhere out of the way (Video uses alot of disk space and before long you'll have multiple harddisks in the server).

Thats the way I've setup my system.

This is my first server install and I've not entirely come to terms with handling it. I've especially got problems with setting up samba which to this day ain't working despite several attempts. I'm tempted to reinstall, thinking that this will contribute to a solution.

As for non-GUI, I gave up on that fairly quickly. I'm using ssh for some tasks, plus sudo mc via ssh, but would struggle great without a GUI. Speaking of GUI, how do I start my server, but not the GUI once it's installed?

Lars

Hi,

Maybe this https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/11131 is the answer.

As far as I'm concerned mythbuntu makes a good lan server (for me). It's nicely stripped down and has SMB, apache, mysql etc all up and running.

Best of luck, Rob.
