View Full Version : Microsoft takes away WGA's teeth in Vista

It started out, that to pirate Vista, you had to:

1. Install it in trial mode.
2. Disable User Account Control
3. Find an OEM serial number somewhere on the internet.
4. Either edit your BIOS by hand to forge that OEM's digital signature, then give Vista the serial number, possibly destroying your BIOS in the process, the plus side being Microsoft could never tell your PC apart from the real OEM's - OR - Install a driver file that emulated the OEM's BIOS signature (Nuked by Service Pack 1) - OR - Install a program that prevented the trial/grace period timer from counting down. (Also nuked by Service Pack 1)

BUT

Since Microsoft's Windows Genuine (Dis)advantage kept malfunctioning and killing off legitimate copies of Windows that were bought and paid for, Microsoft took away WGA's teeth and decided that now, not only will it NOT lock you out if your system doesn't validate (It just gives you a 15 second nag screen on boot up), it also offers you a legitimate license at a 50% discount, so now not only are "pirates" not afraid of getting caught, they know that even if they do, the worst that could happen is they get Windows at half price.

But it gets better...

The new "pirate" copies of Windows not only integrate Service Pack 1, they also disable WGA and activate the damned thing for you! So not only is it free, but it's actually more convenient than dealing with the retail product.

I about fell out of my chair laughing when I was reading about all that, could it be that Microsoft is finally realizing that not only does product activation and WGA not work, they're ONLY succeeding in angering their own customers?

It reminds me of those security devices on cars that never stop the thieves, but just make sure there's been thousands of dollars in damage done in the process of stealing it.

Lesson for Microsoft:

Charge a fair price and remove the incredibly annoying "copy protection" and maybe half the copies of Windows out there wouldn't be "pirated".

This is certainly humorous. Can you provide links, too?

The problem is that MS didn't fully test that system and people ended up finding flaws in it. I remember updating my graphics card driver and networking card driver and getting a pop-up saying I wasn't registered. I spent 1 1/2 hours each time trying to get MS to reactivate it. Now I can do a full reinstall (Clean install, not upgrade which is the version I have) call them and they reactivate my OS, no questions ask.

wga has never inconvenienced anyone but genuine users of windows, users of pirate copies don't give a s**t when the latest 'fix' is only a quick download away, and then when that 'fix' has been blocked by ms, the next latest 'fix' is only a quick download away.

a lot of the windows users i know are running pirate copies, mainly because it is easier, and less hassle to install one than continually try to prove to microsoft that the copy they originally had was genuine.

glad i don't have to bother about all that crap now, linux rocks!

I find the tone of the WGA blog quite humorous and ironic.

"We are restricting your freedom for your own good; and you will be happy to know we constantly tweak the freedom oppression based on your feedback..."

microsoft seem to be inferring here they will give you a copy of genuine windows for nothing!
Additionally, customers who believe they have been victimized by software piracy can submit their counterfeit copy of Windows to Microsoft for evaluation and may be eligible for a complimentary replacement.

What about Linux Genuine Advantage ?

http://www.linuxgenuineadvantage.org/

"According to an independent study conducted by some scientists, many users of Linux are running non-Genuine versions of their operating system. This puts them at the disadvantage of having their computers work normally, without periodically phoning home unannounced to see if it's OK for their computer to continue functioning. These users are also missing out on the Advantage of paying ongoing licensing fees to ensure their computer keeps operating properly."

To remedy this, we have created a new program available as a required free download: Linux Genuine Advantage™!

Linux Genuine Advantage™ works by checking our licensing server periodically to make sure that the copy of Linux you are running is Genuine. This is determined by whether you have paid us the appropriate licensing fees. If you are out of compliance, and are past the grace period, logins to your machine will be disabled until the license fees are paid. How to log in to enter the license key when logins are disabled is left as an exercise for the reader.

Finally! Linux users can experience a feature that until now remained the exclusive domain of proprietary software."

LATEST NEWS:

The Windows Genuine Advantage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Genuine_Advantage) servers went down worldwide (http://crunchgear.com/2007/08/25/windows-genuine-advantage-server-down-worldwide/), marking any Windows machines as pirated during Microsoft's server outage. Meanwhile, the Linux Genuine Advantage™ activation server was up the whole time. Truly another victory for Open Source software! Microsoft, contact us if you'd like to license Linux Genuine Advantage™, we'd love to enter into a lucrative licensing agreement. With the money you save, you could put the WGA programmers onto other tasks, like improving Vista!
