View Full Version : Randomly losing hard drive space?

The other week I had around 425 GB free, this morning it was at 401 and I looked just now, and it's at 391 free. I haven't done ANYTHING on the computer at all today other than just listen to music from WMP. It hasn't even been hooked up to the net (on a different machine at the moment). Any ideas on why this is happening?

EDIT: I'm using Vista Home Premium

Possible Virus Eating up your space? Have you done a virus scan?

Could for some reason a much bigger hard drive swap was needed for the memory? Does Vista do this automatically? How much ram do you have, was the computer left on all this time?

Windows slows down after some time and needs to be rebooted, maybe if there is a slow down the measurement of the hard drive is off somehow?

If you shut the computer off and turn it on, does the Hard Drive go back to 425 MB, does it stay at 391 MB or goes lower? It could be a Vista glitch more than a HD problem, did you do any updates or just recently add SP1 ?

Are the drives partitioned? if so ....has the partition size changed? Hpw much?

Disable System Restore if you're never going to use it, that can save up so much memory.

3GB ram. It was on about 14 hours yesterday when I lost 10GB. Turned it off for the night, and now it's back to 392.

I usually turn it off every night. It's never on for more than two days.

No partitions, no new updates.

Well, I'm on the phone with HP right now, and I'm going to have to send it in.

Looks like I'll be bonding with my Ubuntu for a while

ah this happened to me. its the system restore feature after you do windows updates or shut it down or something. you can disable it. its microsofts way of making windows more "secure"
good that your bonding w/ ubuntu :) stay with ubuntu its awesome

Turns out, there's also a hardware problem. I'm not really sure what happened. It was running fine the other day (Windows fine, not Ubuntu fine...I now know the difference.) and now it just fell apart.

Once 8.04 comes out, I'm going to dual-boot it on my Windows machine. I can't wait! Thank goodness it's just a few days away...
