I have never even touched a computer with a native* installation of any version of windows inside my own house**. Why isn't there a poll option?
However, i have a virtual machine configured with XP in my Linux box right now. (only for running programs that aren't linux native, like Flash and Adobe Audition)

*i.e. not in a virtual machine
**apart from two occasions. Both were when i inherited a computer with windows on it. I instantly wiped them and replaced them with Linux.

I have fond memories of Windows 3.1. We kept that box running for a long time, too. It was working the day we got rid of it (I'd hazard a guess that it was at least ten years old at that point), and we only did because we didn't have room for it anymore.

I was a long-time MS-DOS user. I tried to get along with Windows 3.1, but hardware drivers back then were largely geared towards DOS. I made the switch to Mac long before MS introduced Plug-and-Play. Even though it was dicey at first, PnP eventually brought some parity for MS to the Mac's ease of installation and use for hardware components.

Linux still has some catching up to do, but our community has different challenges and wildly different advantages.

Cheers!

Windows 95...however, that box has been upped to Xubuntu 6.06.1 LTS server a while back (well, it was the Ubuntu server, and i decided to use xfce for those rare occasions where i needed a GUI, and to test it). But yeah, i still have the box it was on :P my first ever computer was an Apple from like 1990? but yeah, that's another story all together (still in existence too btw)

Unless you pressed ctrl+alt+delete...

And yes, win 3.11 for me too, but as I was born in 92, I have an excuse as to why I didn't use anything prior to that XD

Windows 3.11.

I miss the good old days when I had a choice to launch Windows if I wanted and ran everything from command line.

Must be a contributing factor as to why I now run Linux. :lolflag:

First version of Windows I used was DOS/Windows 3.1. It wasn't half bad really. My Auntie had it on her old machine a good 12 years ago or so. Whenever I wanted to make paper aeroplanes she'd fire up publisher and print me off a template. I couldn't access any games through windows 3.1 so I had to reboot and type in the DOS commands. Those games were awesome. Anyone played Monster Bash?

After that I used 95 for a while with a 56k modem that only ever connected at 12.2kbps. Then 98 to play Diablo II: LoD. Then good old XP! That is a good OS. I now have Vista but I hate it. If I disable anything then Windows blows up in your face. "YOU HAVEN'T GOT EVERYTHING RUNNING THAT WINDOWS WANTS YOU TO!" Yeah cos I don't want to have to allow things every time I click on a programme. When I click, I want! I'd switch back to XP but it takes so long to get it all back up and running. With Ubuntu it's click and go!

First one was Win 3.1 on DOS 6.0 on a 486 SX-25. Then Win 3.11 on DOS 6.22, back when OS upgrades were cheap.

After that, it was a Win 95.

Then a new Pentium 233 with Win 98, then 98SE.

Then Win2000, then XP. My parents have a computer with ME (blech) and a new one with Vista (double blech).

I used NT at work.

So I've had experience with every version except for 3.0 and the previous ones 2.0 and 1.0, which I've only seen pictures of.

Win3.1 was great. You actually had the OPTION of running Windows or DOS.

I remember briefly trying out Win3.0 and it was awful. Everytime you clicked on a folder in File Manager, it would open a new window for it. It didn't take long to have 20 windows open on your desktop, and then you'd have to close them all.

But yeah, Win3.1 and 95 are my fondest Windows memories. The worst was probably WinME.

My first OS to use was MS-DOS with NC... As for Win, it was 3.11. However, all those machines were at my school, and I didn'thave my own. As for my own computers, the first one was a 486-based IBM ThinkPad with mighty 8MB of RAM, 200MB HDD and Win95... The mouse was connected to a COM port. Then it died and I've got a Win2000-running machine. Since then it was upgraded to the point that the only parts remainging from it are CD-ROM, 20GB HDD (used as secondary) and probably the power supply. Now I'm happily running XP on it.

The first version of Windows I used, was version 2.1 on my parents PC. I think I've still got the installation disks and manuals somewhere.

Since then on my home computers I've gone from 3.11 > 95 > 98 > 98SE > XP > Vista Business (less than a week before removal) > 2003 Enterprise

My favourite would probably be either 3.11 or XP, my least favourite would be Vista though I did manage to avoid ME.

I suddenly have the urge to try and install Windows 2.1 in a virtual machine.

Windows 3.0

No it wasn't because it was the latest release, it was because I lived in a little hick town and in 1996 our middle school's computer class used 80286 PC's and a few Apple II's, although the Apples were more fun because their operating system consisted entirely of the BASIC computer language, it was fun wiping all the 5 1/4" disks and putting a "new" program on them.

10 PRINT "GO F**K YOURSELF!"
20 GOTO 10

Next day in computer class.......well...call it Virtual **** Cheney 1.0.

Dos... which I guess can also be considered within the windows 3.1 realm. Because Windows 3.1 was a program that ran on top of DOS (which was the operating system) :)

Windows for Workgroups 3.11, which I clearly remember crashed on startup once. Program Manager appeared, but the icons didn't, the startup music was stuck repeating a note over and over, and the whole system was hung.

The PC it was on really should've come with Windows 95, but didn't. We got a discount on it, but had to install it ourselves, and the system was never really stable. It ended up being hit by a nasty virus, which resulting in a series of reformats and reinstalls, with the system alternating between Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and Windows 95 (which I think I upgraded to Windows 95a at one point with a CD).

It wasn't a brilliant PC, but it gave me some good experience. I actually have Windows 3.1 installed right now on a virtual C drive used by DOSBox. I must admit to actually liking the clean, sharp look (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/73/Windows_3.11_workspace.png) of the GUI and icons. I still prefer that sort of look to the softer, more photo-realistic look (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/54/KDE_4.png) of modern GUIs and icons, but have never found anything to replicate that old look.

Back then at the age of 5 years i started out with Windows 3.1 when my mom brought home a computer from work, so she could do some stuff at home.

I liked it. Really. 3.1 and later 3.11 for Workgroups weren't such bad OSes.
They were too simple to bear such broblems that we know from Win95 and upwards.

The first computer I had was a 286 with MS DOS 6.0, I think. It had a monochrome graphics card and no CDROM, mouse, sound, etc. I thought it was state of the art back then. I was about eleven or twelve years old and I remember finding some Basic code in a magazine for a King Kong-like game and it took me hours to type it all into the Basic IDE that came with DOS. That was my first video game.

My first version of Windows was 3.0 which was soon upgraded to 3.11.

I (barely) remember when my father first brought it home. I was about 4 at the time. That box ran for about 10 years before we finally threw it away after its third monitor died. In between, I've 98, a couple XP boxes, and I booted Vista when it came with my laptop out of curiosity. Over the course of the last year, all of those have been freed by linux or bsd. The air in my house is so much fresher now that the windows are out of the way.

I began with MS-DOS on my wife's Tandy 1000 with no internal hd, only a 5.25" floppy drive to serve that purpose. I wrote all my papers with it in my first year of grad school. Then I got a research asst job and moved up to the big time with a new desktop and 3.1 in 1992. It had a 386 with 4mb of ram and it was the bomb.

I had an old computer, some weird thing with a really small screen that had DOS on it...
Then another one with Windows 1.0, upgraded to 2.0. I had a 3.1 for the longest time, probably until 1998... My family had a 95 and 98 but they werent mine per se...
We then got a computer with ME on it- my siblings and I drove it into the ground. I looked at the specs on that thing and it should not have been able to run the games we put on it... my current Acer laptop has trouble with some of those games still...
Then we bought a Dell with XP in 2002, and it is still running.
I have a Vista computer currently, so over the past 20 years I have had every single OS except for 2000 by Microsoft.

Never run Bob by the way.
