Say you have a windows partition coexisting with your linux.

Firstly, can we mount a windows partition automatically in linux. Or at least have a promt during Linux installation. Or even have like a set of tools availible with the vanilla install to do many of the things that are in the Ubuntu Starter guide. Just automate things, like adding repositories, mounting drives, changing icons (firefox/thunderbird) ... (obviously have an explanation of what you are doing etc)?

Secondly. Maybe linux could scan for common/popular windows programms on the windows partition et cetera. Then when complete, suggest a bunch on OSS alternatives availible for Linux. And provide user ratings or some commentry, describing its dev status, usefullness, stability, and availibilty for Ubuntu/AMD64. And if it was in a synaptic repo, maybe some sort of hotlink to both launch synaptic and initiate an installation via synaptic

Would be soo helpful for people who dont know heads or tails of whats availible in the world of linux.

Theres allot out there and its really hard to know where to start, and what to expect.

A better way to understand what programs are available would be very useful, who would know what epiphany or evince are by there names? Things in the gnome menu should be called by what they do not their names. For example evince ->document view, firefox/epiphany -> web browser, evolution -> email. Similiar to how Rhythmbox is referred to as Music Player
