I just installed Puppy Linux 4 Beta. The first thing I noticed was the boot time (already fast) was improved. When I got to the desktop though It blew me away. The wallpaper and default theme are great. All the problems in Puppy3 are non-existent. Seamonkey and Gxine no longer hang. There is a system tray for things such as instant messengers. It is anything you can want from a modern os on one cd, and it can run in ram. I was a fan of Puppy 3, but 4 is great. As I am keeping the beta on its own partition, when the final is out I am going to use that as my main os, along with Hardy.

Nice...
I haven't used puppy linux ever since I started using Zenwalk on my older pc's, but this looks like it would be worth trying again.:KS

Thanks for the post - I've downloaded it, and it IS nice (Well, except that I can't get any sound at all, but I never got sound to work with any of the other puppies either...)
Still, for such a nice pendrive linux I can live without sound, I guess...

It surprisingly works flawlessly on mine except I can never use my correct resolution.

you have a nvidia or ATI card? I think that may be why.

I think all I would have to do is set refresh rate correct but it is easier to just pick xvesa and use 1024x768. :)

quick q: if I download the ISO, and burn a cd with it, will I b able to boot from CDROM and install directly to hardrive. or do i have to go thru USB installation;
I have a very old desktop pc:
Intel celerom 1.2Ghz, 128MB RAM, and 20G HDD, USB port is 1.1 compliant (had win98SE on it when I found this machine in my friends garage). tried ubuntu 7.04 but hell it is like swimming thru molasses!

Yes download, and run the live session. Then use the partition manager to create a ext2 partition, and a swap about x2 size of your ram. Then run the "universal installer" under "setup menu". Choose the appropriate defaults, and I think you should install grub under MBR.

I like this very much, actually. I am posting right now from it. It actually recognises my monitor's resolution. :D

I will say that Puppy is a nice distro because it's small and the support forum is VERY active compared to ubuntu forums.

Um... are you joking? You don't think this place is active enough?!
This forum is the reason that I've now been using Linux for 18 months or so. The friendly guys here patiently talked me through every newbie problem I had (and I had a LOT of them).
And without wishing to run down the Puppy forums, I've also posted questions there, but have yet to get a single reply to any.
Personally, I think this forum rules!
