When I purchased my Ubuntu system last June I had all the downloads installed and it worked fine. Then for some reason I could no longer get into a chat room on a diabetic forum. Everytime I try to download the plugin it gives me an error message { /tmp/jre-6u5-linux-x64.bin Could not be opened because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences}. I am not sure what this means but all the other plugins work just fine.

There is no Java plugin for 64bit systems (still - after over 5 years now of inaction by Sun), you may need to install the IcedTea alternatives - do a forum search for details.

While there is no plugin yet, is incorrect that inaction is "still" persisting. Sun Java 7, now in development will have a 64bit plugin. It was announced in July-August of 07.
