i am stationed in a really small town with no higher ed schools available(not even a vo-tech school).
was wondering about taking Linux courses online.
anybody could comment on how it is,, quality? worth the effort? etc?
i just started learning linux ubuntu on my own,, reading the book and the forums,, but it is sooooo slow trying to learn this way. and i get frustrtated when i have questions that the book does not address.

That is one reason I suggested Desktop Sharing (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=630793) (aka OS X Screen Sharing). We could teach each other over the net in online meetings. If you like the idea then post on the link.
Vote for it here: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/7487/ (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/my_ideas)

There is a world of educational opportunities out there. I know that the online ed program at snow.edu functions with Ubuntu boxes -- I use an Ubuntu box to teach my courses: http://www.snow.edu/semester.html
If your question is about Linux courses specifically, our school does not teach any yet. I have spoken to our CIS people and they remain hypnotized by Microsoft hegemony -- regardless of how many demonstrations of Open Source software I give them, they persist in denial. I recent demonstration of Open Office elicited this response.
"Have you seen the footnoting functionality in the most recent MS Word program?"
Or the teachers in the Information Sciences area will say, "We have to teach what businesses use."
They are not moved by the notion that we can teach principals that will help students face a number of different applications.
Welcome to Ubuntu -- take some online classes in ANYTHING! As another poster pointed out, you can learn Linux on your own -- if you take courses in Education, you can then seek out a job at Snow.edu and move the department in the direction of Ubuntu.
This is how change happens. Don't wait -- do it.

I dont know any online learning places but I would say you could ask in forums or other special websites for persons who would help you online for a little money in the month.
For example once I saw a site where someone was looking for online help in learning php, maybe you a know a site too. Think it would be important to learn it in your own language, so its as easy as possible. Good luck!
