Hi,
Well after browsing many posts, googling heaps etc. I finally find my graphics card is blacklisted re-compiz.
So is it possible to get 'eye-candy', pretty stuff, without compiz? suggestions please?
Edit: Mobile IntelGraphics Media Accelerator x3100 (sorry, forgot to add that bit)

You can use xcompmgr. It provides window shadiwing and composite support for docks and screenlets.
But I think your X3100 (i read it somewhere) can run compiz, you need to remove it drom the blacklist. I dont know why :(

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I know there is an' override' command to allow it to use confiz, BUT as is pointed out in the blacklist sticky, do it at own risk, & I dont think I am prepared to take that risk.

Where is stated that the X3100 is blacklisted? And why: because it's too old (and slow), or too new? I would expect that any not-too-old Intel GPU works.
Have you read this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3451249
FWIW: I have a 1.5 year old Fujitsu SIemens E8110 with a "Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller" and compiz works out-of-the-box. I'm a big fan of Intel GPU's: no proprietary drivers, and Compiz just works, even directly from the Live CD.

I've got that card and compiz runs fine on my desktop.
Don't worry about the blacklist, dive in!
