I can see this one being moved to What's really so bad about Vista? (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=170]Windows Discussions[/URL] since there's already plenty of discussions about this. These for instance: [URL="http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=349361), and Linux vs. Vista (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=253885)

if you want games and depend on proprietary software you should go with xp
if you want free software and a fast no laggish system, then you should go with a linux distro
if you want a bloated crap you should go with vista
is your choice.

i thought it wasn't necessary to give a serious answer to that thread. have a look at his other postings and you'll know why...

I'm having tons of problems with ubuntu, atm, but I like it since it has really nice eycandy, and I learn a lot of linux with it. If you're not willing to learn and take away some of the convieniences you had with windows, stay there. You can scroll nonactive windows in linux, which I find is a convienience to me.

see, that's the difference (don't want to offend you): i don't like ubuntu for it's eyecandy, but for it's functionality and the ability to actually be able to be system admin and not just wear that name for fun. eyecandy is rather a windows feature drawing your attention away from the os' deficiencies.
in my opinion, windows is mostly for playing games, linux is for serious work and a lot beyond that, and windows vista is for the garbage bin.

It really comes down to the following (imo):
Linux (all distrobutions) are designed differently then Windows as an operating system. If you do not want to take the time to learn something new, and learn how to work with something that is entirely different. Do not switch. Do not switch just b/c someone tells you it is better. When someone says "Linux is way better" they're really saying "Linux is way better, for me." It's not the magic godsend OS, if it were the Window's market share would be significantly less. Despite what the fanboys of Linux (Ubuntu seems to have the most) claim, it is not a "Window's replacement" it is something entirely different. Yes, you can do a majority (if not all) of Windows tasks within Linux, but you'll have to once again, learn new apps and programs.
If there is any doubt, try dual-booting, that way you can have a fail-safe if you will. Can't get your network to go in Ubuntu? Reboot into XP to search for the drivers. Given the negative results of Vista and that Window's 7 may be released in '09, I would recommend you stick with XP if you're maintaining the Window's route.

Way too biased. Don't like that site.
Forget about viruses - no. acknowledge that viruses exist. be wary when doing anything as root/superuser. linux != worry-free disneyland
Is your system unstable? - my tweaked winxp that hadn't changed for 3-4 yrs was more stable than ubuntu.
Linux protects your computer. - no. the user protects his/her computer. linux isn't gonna protect someone who installs packages from 1337haxorer.com
Don't pay $300 for your operating system. - true
Freedom! - true
When the system has installed, why would you still need to install stuff? - for one, we'd want to stream/watch videos/audio.
Update all your software with a single click. - very true, apt is a huge benfit
Why copy software illegally if you can get it for free? - because some people need proprietary software for work/school/uni.
Need new software? Don't bother searching the web, Linux gets it for you. - not all the time. sometimes you have to rely on researching the web for trustworthy third-party software
Jump into the next generation of desktops. - wobbly windows and rotating cubes don't increase productivity. in fact, it kills battery life.
Does your digital life seem fragmented? - true
Choose what your desktop looks like. - partially true, linux is far more customizable for free
Why does your Windows get slower day after day? - no. i left my xp box on 24/7, though in windows i had to run daily scans for viruses/adware/fragmentation/etc,
Do something for the environment. - join greenpeace instead.
Enjoy free and unlimited support. - the internet is the main medium of support for home users in both OS's.
Use MSN, AIM, ICQ, Jabber, with a single program. - i already used gaim/pidgin in winxp.
Too many windows? Use workspaces. - true.
Don't wait years for bugs to be solved, report and track them down. - true.
Are you tired of restarting your computer all the time? - i never restarted my winxp.
Let your old computer have a second life. - true
Play hundreds of games for free. - Yeh ok. Forget about WoW/SC/WC/UT/CS at internet cafes. have sudoku lan parties instead to see who can get the quickest times.
Help other countries, and your own. - join the army instead.
Get a great music player. -debatable topic. it's available on windows anyway.
Keep an eye on the weather. - similar freeware exist in winxp.

don't know what you're using your xp for, but mine needs a reboot every time some stupid driver or update is installed. same's still true for vista - which is really embarrassing after that long time of development.
Help other countries, and your own. - join the army instead.
ouch - i think you've missed some important lessons in life. or you're from the u.s. ....

Linux: No Costs, Smooth, Stable, Fast, and doesn't get "old and sluggish"Most problems come from bad user input only. None of the commercial games, but tons of freeware games
Windows: Costs, Smooth at first only and when maintained drastically, DOES get "old and sluggish", unless you are a major expert, then you can salvage about 60% or so of the overall system speed. Unpredictable stability, user must use with caution all the time. Most problems come from bad user input, ALONG with weak security, being in dangerous places online, using filesharing, installing too much software, getting tons of emails, viruses are still prevelant, unless you scan with several engines, because none of the anti-viruses can find them all. The windows registry slows down the entire system with age normally, but it can be cleaned to slice that reduction in half for a month or so. Great games and famous software, but extremely dangerous and unpredictable if your no windows expert. Best for windows experts, or else you'll NEED a window's expert near by to help you, always. Has a mind of it's own sometimes, because some problems never seem to get fixed.Tons of GUI management, so don't expert the command prompt to run commands as easy as linux. Terrible fragmentation unless you use a nice defrag program, like jkdefrag.
My conclusion. Use them both, but learn and use linux as your main operating system. use windows as your secondary just to use what can't run in linux yet, but don't do a lot of internet stuff in windows. Use all your internet aps in linux and you should be pretty darn safe.

lol i'm sorry i didn't actually read through all the links and was assessing purely on the subject headings. So you're right on both counts.
1) True. Windows Updates nearly always required restarts. Ubuntu's rarely does (well at the moment it does, but only because it's in beta stages).
2) True. A global monopoly of computer operating systems is bad for the global economy.
In the end, they are two different operating systems that work completely differently. Switching over to Ubuntu isn't a matter of turning to something better. It's about being willing to learn about something unconventional to what you're used to.
If you're looking for an operating system that "works like it's supposed to," then keep looking. If you want to spend time learning about Linux, Ubuntu is the easiest (most user-friendly) distribution to do it from. If you're looking for something that works as you're used to, stick with Windows.
