Yeah, they had a working driver but took it out. I guess it was removed since people would have to modify their xorg.conf?
Is there any way to remove tapping with the current alps/synaptic driver?

This was provide by ajaustin:
Attached is my xorg.conf file in case it is of any help to you. I have disabled tapping because I just can't cope with it, too clumsy!http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=2852&d=1129216914
This is another work around provided by Pausanias: sudo sh -c "echo options psmouse proto=exps > /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.modprobe" Then reboot
only problem with the above code is that if you reinstall you have to use the code again.
hopefully the dev's find a fix thats permanent fix.

Neither fix seemed to work for me... Is there a way to make (or is it safer to use) the package they had before they regressed versions.

I have a sony pcg-f430 which has a synaptics/alps touchpad. It wa not recognized properly in Breezy, but in Dapper it is. So I can now use the synclient and syndaemon programs to totally control the actions of the touchpad. This is great because with:
syndaemon:
I can turn on/off the touchpad automatically. A keystroke turns it off, and it is reactivated .3 seconds after the last keystroke for me. The time is totally adjustable. This stops me from moving the cursor accidentally with my thumbs when typing, moving it to another line or another window entirely!
synclient:
totally adjusts every feature of the touchpad, from sensitivity to scrolling on the right side of the touchpad to hotspot buttons (TR/BL). Although if you want them to stick automatically you need to add them to your xorg.conf file, you can also just have gnome run a program for you on startup (synclient with appropriate options set).
Hopefully this helps. For me, having the touchpad options available to me again is really great!

Never worked in breezy on a Sony Vaio either, and when I upgraded to dapper, it screwed it up worse at first. Terribly slow speed and I couldn't do anything about it. I reinstalled with Fight 5, and it was working primo.
