View Full Version : infractions for thread hijacking

Start rant: They should give infractions for thread hijacking!! If I start a thread called who is the hottest video game chick of all time, and you don't like hot video game chicks then leave my thread alone. Start your own thread and call it "why I don't like hot video game chicks" If I start a thread called who is your favorite athlete, and you don't think that it's right for guys throwing a ball around to make millions of dollars, leave
my thread alone and start your own thread and call it "pro athletes are over payed" End rant:

I second this, although i think infractions are a little harsh....

Agreed. That existential divergence in the hottest video game thread was rather distracting from the hotness being displayed....:)

grow up man, it's a forum. a open community where everyone can input. you may start the thread, but you don't own the thread, it belongs to everyone, when you pay the forum bills, you can call it yours.
did you ask the offender politely to move on?

Not the point. The topic of the thread was what was the hottest video game chick, not whether video game chick should be considered hot. It's rude and inconsiderate to interject your off topic opinion in such a manner. If you don't think video game chicks are or should be considered hot, then start a thread with that topic discussion in mind, don't hi-jack someone elses thread. As you say, it is an open community and there is no limit on the amount of threads as long as the topics are differentiable from each other.

it has nothing to do with growing up. the thread ask who is your favorite?, not do you agree? it's rude to hijack my thread the person has every right to disagree all I ask is that he uses his own thread to do so. Is this childish? I call it respect. Certain threads are open to all opinions such as this one, but if my thread ask for something specific such as your favorite what ever, then your adversity towards it is unwelcome. Like I said start your own thread voicing your opinion leave mine alone

well maybe a post saying "i don't think any video chicks are hot" is relevant because your post is about hot video game chicks and somebody is expressing their view about it. not everybody has a favorite and you wanna exclude those with a different opinion than your own.

please don't be a hitler.

No, I would agree that is acceptable in the thread. What wouldn't be acceptable, IMHO, is blasting people or saying people are weird for admiring artwork, which was what was happening in the thread in question.

yes because my thread is for people that think video game chicks are hot. that would be like me going on the apple ppc users thread and saying macs suck. I know the admins would step in if I did that so whats the difference here?

No, I would agree that is acceptable in the thread. What wouldn't be acceptable, IMHO, is blasting people or saying people are weird for admiring artwork, which was what was happening in the thread in question.

This is why you are provided with a Report button so that you can let us take a look and take the appropriate measures.

@OP:- This is what you failed to do, you took matters into your own hands and got yourself into trouble for insulting a member because you wanted to "protect" your thread, you should have just reported the post in question so that we could have had a look and taken the appropriate measures without you having to get into trouble.

I've never been one to snitch, but since you know now did the op get one for implying that I have no life and can't get a girl friend

people are expressing what they feel about people who are looking at video game chicks...

its still relevant to the thread.

and i don't think you should make the mods' jobs harder by making sure they conform to your views... especially with pointless , OMG pink PoniEs threads.

go to a video game chicks website if you want to have an epic video game chicks thread. don't expect every ubuntu user to think the same as you.

a lot of us are libertarian, or socialist, or... not what you are. we are a very diverse bunch and i think one of the cornerstones of linux is a lack of censorship.

it doesn't matter what the thread is or who started it, any one at any time can cut in, it's the nature of a forum. it's free speech, you can't depend on people to do what's right to you. there are hundreds of different type of people, raised and taught different ways of doing things, what may be rude to you, might be perfectly normal where there from.
but like i said you don't own the thread, you can't think of it as yours, a thread takes on a life of it's own, long after you created it.
i can go into a thread and say "hey, change of subject. who you voting for?" why? because i felt like it. your unwritten rule of curtsy means nothing to me. of course i'm not that type and wouldn't purposely do something like that, but that's just me.

Infractions are a private matter between the staff and the user to which it was issued. Unless, of course, the user wishes to make it public. ;)

In any case, you say you don't want to "snitch," but the report button is the correct way to deal with problems here. Other methods are liable to get you yourself in trouble, so the options are:
1) Report posts which you find inappropriate.
2) Ignore them.

Kindly drop this matter swoll1980, it is not going anywhere and the fact of the matter is that you made the mistake of insulting the member for seemingly insulting you instead of reporting the post in question as is the appropriate action.

well i would because my iBook broke one day after my warranty expired because the graphics chip was held on with a blob of solder and it melted. apple refused to admit there was a problem. meanwhile, more than 1000 others had the same problem as me and moved on.

i however will always hold a grudge against apple for making me pay $2000 for a pile of poop.

If you mean that all people in a thread should have just one opinion then it is rather unacceptable since everyone has their own opinions and they are free to express it on Ubuntu Forums as long as their opinion corroborates with the thread's context.

should i write a thread blasting you for your opinion because it differs from mine?

please don't make me look bad.

As for thread hijacking, an infraction could be given for deliberate derailment with an intent to cause trouble (flamebaiting, trolling, etc), but discussions often get side tracked by accident (someone makes a small comment, someone responds, and so one).

If the accidental hijacks are too distracting, or over powering the thead, you can report the first one, and ask them to be moved to another thread.

See my other post. There is an easy way to resolve such issues without any infractions.

The reason as to why the infraction was given is rather clear, so there is no use in going on with this thread.

Can't we all just consider this matter over and get on with our lives?:)
