gOS just released their gnome version gOS Space i just tried it and i am very impressed....but there was a major bug in the live cd....the live cd comes with compiz fusion turned on by default....but for some reason with it turned on you cannot see the applets on the gnome panel...so i turned it off but the thing is AWN (which comes by default) has to have a compositor to work...i have not installed it so maybe there are some updates/fixes....anybody else try this?

Hello, i've installed gOS space on my laptop and i am very very please with it, i'm impressed with the everex team, i dont really see anything different between gOS space and ubuntu, besides the net links on the awn stacks and a gOS menu on the gnome panel, and which btw the livecd worked perfect for me, all the applets on the gnome-panel worked and so did the awn dock (which i adore), my setup though looks *nothing* like the default gOS space setup, i really see it as ubuntu with awn dock (done very well in my opinion) compiz works perfect on it. I just see this as a easy way to get ubuntu with eye candy if you want to think of it that way. I've been waiting for this for a while, and glad they switched to gnome, i didnt really like their enlightenment setup.. thats another story though

here are some links to my setup

i love all of these applets especially the awn terminal :guitar:

I'm running xubuntu on an older laptop w/ no cd drive. I was able to install gOS 1.0 that uses enlightment, but i was wondering if i could get gos space?

I've asked on the gOS forum with no help. Xubuntu ran kinda slow, and gOS 1.0 is doing very well for me now. I was just wondering how gOS using gnome would do.

thanks

unless you can run compiz or xcompmgr on that laptop i dont see gOS space working on it (i believe) if you want light i dont suggest gOS it was just as bloated as ubuntu is, i tried gOS space on virtualbox and it was a no go for me

Or if you want a more up to date one, try OzOS or Maryan Linux. :)

The ISO for it isn't available, but if you install ubuntu-minimal and then install E17 and your favorite apps on top, it will work. For a guide, I recommend Rui Pais's tutorial (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=546746). :)

Hi guys.
Well you have now a 32bits OzOS version on a liveCD:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=756038

and yes the manual method (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=623803) still works fine (preferred way for many :))

I'm going to try and install it now. I had gOS installed, but installed opengeu and tried to remove and it screwed gOS all up. But i can still get to xubutnu.

Thanks for the heads up!

enjoy maryan. i played with it for a few days, lots of potential... couldn't keep it due to tiny HD space. a beta 2 is due soon supposedly.

if xubuntu felt a bit slow for you, gos space will be very slow.... i did play with gos 2.0 rocket beta and that felt faster than xubuntu. the GoS team is offering 3 downloads, why not try the updated gos rocket. or see if you can find a torrent of gos ultimate - that was quite a lot better than gos rocket beta.

Hi dmiller40,
The main issue with OzOS on gOS base, it's that gOS uses an e17 not compatible with the one OzOS uses (e17-cvs).

So it needs to remove that e17 and consequently gos desktop meta-packages. The problem it's that apt it's not the best "kid on the block" for that purpose :(
Typically things was left beyond on your disc and starts to conflict...
Lets hope that your e17-cvs it's installed ok, and linked against the correct libs (not some phantoms ones lurking mixed in your system...) you need to clean that old reference to enlightenment_start.
Check what package install it:
dpkg -S /usr/bin/enlightenment_start

remove any package it list with:
sudo aptitude purge <name_of_package>
sudo apt-get autoremove

If possible, open Synaptic and removed any e17 things listed, except e17-cvs.

Check if any /usr/bin/enlightenment_start has been removed:
sudo rm /usr/bin/enlightenment_start

Do a:
sudo aptitude resinstall e17-cvs
(to ensure that correct enlightenment starter it's installed)

Should be working by then.

Post on any problem.

So now my keyboard is messed up, i can navigate to keyboard settings in xfce, then layout and "Use X cofiguration" is checked.

I uncheck and change the layout and click close, but when i go back in it is checked again. The whole right 1/2 of my keyboard is off.

UPDATE!!! Ok did a little searching and it was a hardware setting i guess, the number lock was set. SO now back to fixing OZ.

Ok, it seems i keep getting worse at this. I was trying to get my eth0 to work and i screwed up royally now.

I login to xfce and get this message:
"the configuration could not be loaded you are not allowed to access the system configuration"

login to elightenment.desktop i get this still:
"Xsession: unable to launch "/usr/bin/enlightenment_start" X session ---"/usr/bin/enlightenment_start" not found; falling back to default session."

fail safe gnome:
could not find gnome install trying xterm

xterm:
no xterm loging into fail safe terminal

terminal:
if i run sudo anything i get:
"E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administrator directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?"

Hi dmiller40, sorry to hear about it.:(

1st. try to login from a console (Ctrl+Alt+F1).

Now check whats the output of:
ls -l .dmrc
and
ls -l .ICEauthority
output should be:
-rw------- yourusername yourusername
If not the case than you have a problem...

Kill all dpkg that may be running incorrectly (broken):
sudo killall -9 dpkg
then to make sure all it's ok run:
sudo apt-get install -f

About your issue with e17, start up,
whats the output of:
dpkg -S /usr/bin/enlightenment_start
slocate libecore.so
please?

Ok not sure if i understand what you mean by try to login by console.

The only 2 things i can do is login to xfce, but my panels dont show all i see is my desktop icons.

I can also login to a fail safe terminal.

I tried Ctrl+F1 in both situations and it does nothing. For the terminal i entered:
ls - l .dmrc

and it returned no such file or directory. Its not a huge deal i can do a netboot tonight and reinstall xubuntu.

Sorry, my mistakes! (doing to much things at same time...)

For console it's Ctrl+Alt+F1 (or +F2... F6)
But if you can login to xfce, even a borked one, it may be easy to type.

Sorry again a typo :(
It's ls -l .dmrc (no space between - and l)

Although it may look to much broken, seem only some config file(s) with incorrect permissions.

i run that and it gets to CVS checkout/update

uhmm... are you under a proxy? do you have internet connection on that machine?

Meanwhile do:
cat $HOME/_skip_easy_e17_install
sudo dpkg --configure -a

that should allow finish dpkg. but will leave you e17-cvs/OzOS uninstalled...

I see. Depends on the kind of connection hardware you have.
Routers should work as long as system boots. wireless may require some application like Wicd...

Try to finish the dpkg --reconfigure or apt-get install -f after the
touch $HOME/_skip_easy_e17_install
and try to login to xfce and see if you have connection.

Ok. That was to solve the dpkg error. It must be working...

You can check if you have internet connection.
If you have it, to finish e17 installation, run:
sudo easy_e17.sh -i

About your issues with xfce. try to open thunar and check if you have files with incorrect permissions (locked or owned by root).
Check hidden files and folders too.
It can be done from command line with:
ls -l ~/.*

If thats the case correct them or, if they are plenty, do on the console and with all xfce sessions closed:
sudo chown -R $USER\: $HOME
Another thing to try to get back some normality it's:
sudo aptitude reinstall xfce4

Good luck

(i'm going to bad now... too tired to be of use, but i'll check in the morning to see how it goes)

Hey Great news!! I'm very glad you manage to solve all your issues.

Questions about OzOS can be put it on ubuntu thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=756038

Or for more support, info, announces and chatting about it, on Cafelinux Forum:
http://cafelinux.org/forum/index.php

My excuses too for the OP about our hijacking.
It was suppose to be a quick tip/links for OzOS, but since you hit some serious troubles i tried to give the much help i could and forget that it was OT.

@Ubuntu Forum Moderators
Sorry about this, maybe someone could move this posts about OzOS install issue to the Ubuntu related thread above?
Thanks,
Rui.

I tried gOS space 2.9 and I have to say after poking around a bit it's just Ubuntu Gutsy under the hood. What I really like was AWN out-of-the-box worked great. I have an IBM Thinkpad T60p with the ATI FireGL 2500 card. It's a really pain to get Compiz to work 'which AWN needs" usally. I did enjoy the space background and the GDM theme and gOS theme and iconset. But at the end of the day I realized that have a straight Ubuntu distro install is better by far than having a spin off.

You be interested to know that I tried upgrading to Hardy using the 'update-manager --dev-release' command which ran fine but at the end of the install there wasn't any kernel images to load after the reboot. So all you get is the memtest. I thought it was me doing something incorrect but I did it like four times. Very strange...So for anyone trying to upgrade from gOS space 2.9 into Hardy 'forget about it'.
