put an icon on the desktop, or somewhere else that is easily accessible,
that will install realplayer and the correct browser mimetypes.

rationale:

1. solves the propriety media-formats doesn't work problem.
2. gets Ubuntu some cash for bundling.
3. enables the base installation to stay Free, while not locking out migration
from other platforms.
4. solves the damn web-media problem.
5. gives Real motivation for continued support for FOSS.
6. untangles the legal problems associated with w32codes, libdvdcss, and etc.

note:
I know it breaks the Freedom as in speech part of FOSS, but ignoring it causes
problems for new/ migrating users. (it's the same rationale for the fglrx, nvidia
drivers, I know all the reasonings, please don't write it again and again and
again)

note:
for the -it's-already-been-done-before-so-don't-worry folks out there:
that's what suse does.

From ubuntu.com: "Ubuntu is entirely committed to the principles of free software development". Because of that I am against the idea of a realplayer icon on the desktop (but be at ease, I have absolutely no say on what get's done and what not). Either you are "entirely commited" or not. Already the propritary tools at launchpad are a thorn in some peoples' eyes.

But nothing against a realplayer package in multiverse or breezy-extras which downloads and installs realplayer.

It already in multiverse. Only it is version 8 instead of 10...

1. it doesn't set-up the mimetypes.
2. I suggest it a an option, the installation by default should be Free and free.

It is WAY to complicated to have an icon to install a plugin to a webbrowser/mediaplayer.
Ubuntu should just have a popup whenever a .ram is tried to be viewed in a webpage.
'Do you wan't to install realplay properitary plugin', and then just go do it!

Ubuntu already does this for flash, so why not for realplayer/divx/wma/quicktime and java?

Because if Ubuntu made a lot of those things easier to install, the developers responsible could be breaking the law for being an accessory to a crime.

There is automatix:

Even if it is never included by default, its easy to install and use.
