what is the best version of vmware to get for ubuntu 7.10 on an amd64 platform?

The one that is free, and can make VMs, is vmware server. I only get it from their site, vmware.com, not through the Ubuntu repos. There seems to be a difference that I don't like, but don't ask me wha.

Has worked for me, through thick and thin, with WinXP, printers, scanners, USB drives, etc.
