View Full Version : Avoid Release Rush!

Last week SUSE 10.0 was launched. Demand was so high that servers were taken aback with requests before mirrors had the time to sync. Torrents were posted on ftp.suse.com (ftp://ftp.suse.com) too, so they were almost imposible to reach. And even when I finally managed to download the torrents, the ISO's downloaded very slow so I gave it up and waited for a Romanian mirror to sync. It was only yesterday that I managed to download all five ISO's, but... big dissapointment! SUSE 10.0 is a very polished distro but my 17-inch display looks like a 15 and the refresh rate can't be set to more than 78, unlike in Windows, Ubuntu and Mandriva, which all allow 85 Hz. Another problem with SUSE and Mandrake 10.1 is that I can't get an Internet connection through my Thomson cable modem (via USB, not ethernet), although that works fine in Windows XP and, of course, Ubuntu.

Anyway, back to the release rush. I have a suggestion from the release team: the demand for Breezy is probably going to be very high, so please put .torrents on more websites and let people know!

Thank you.

Wait... can I ask you how you got the internet to work through USB in Ubuntu? Was it configured automagically? I have a friend who wants Linux (he has SuSE actually) but never uses it because he can't connect through USB in it. Should I tell him to try 5.10?

Yes, 5.04 and 5.10 Preview connected to the Internet during installation to download updates. I didn't have to configure anything.

I have an Allied Telesyn RTL ethernet card that doesn't work (Win XP says "a network cable is unplugged"), but the Thomson modem works through USB in Ubuntu and XP.
