virtualbox usb

i set up my virtualbox to acknowledge my usb and it seems to recognize it (i am using vista as the guest and it shows the icon in the taskbar that tells me i have a USB device attached) however, i cant open my external harddrive to which the usb is attached to. there appears to be no way to access it. is this not possible perhaps?

and as a sidenote, any visions of having shared folders available for vista guest?
